Not only that, but as explained in the Prajñāpāramitā Upadeśa, it is also a contemplation that distinguishes the characteristics of the eighteen elements. From this, it should be understood that other forms of vipassanā (insight meditation) that cultivate by distinguishing the meaning of 'as many as there are' should also be known. Although the Prajñāpāramitā Upadeśa states that before generating śamatha (calm abiding) and vipassanā focused on 'as it is,' one should first generate śamatha and vipassanā of the yogic grounds focused on 'as many as there are,' here, according to the views of Śāntideva, Kamalaśīla, and others, one first generates some form of śamatha and then generates vipassanā, and it only teaches vipassanā focused on 'as it is.' Secondly, one might ask, according to which of the Greater or Lesser Vehicles, or the Sūtras or Tantras, is this method of generating śamatha and vipassanā in stages done? This is common to both the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and the Mahāyānists who follow the Perfection of Wisdom, and it is also common to the four philosophical schools. Similarly, in the three divisions of the Tantras, it has already been explained in the respective Tantras and the views of the great commentators of those Tantras as the stages of the path of mantra. As for Anuttarayoga, the Prajñāpāramitā Upadeśa states, "When one examines one's own mind, all dharmas reside in one's own mind; this dharma resides in the vajra of space; there is no dharma or dharmatā." Also, the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra states, "Relying only on the mind, one does not examine external objects." And so forth, explaining the three grounds of yoga: focusing on mind-only, focusing on suchness, and the yoga of non-appearance. It seems that in the first two grounds, the method of accomplishing śamatha and vipassanā through settling meditation and analytical meditation is explained as before. It is believed that the way of generating is the same in the tantras that focus on 'as it is.' Our own tradition is that even in the case of Anuttarayoga, the way of generating the understanding of view must be done as it comes from the Madhyamaka treatises. In terms of practice, although there is contemplation and attention to suchness at some points in the post-meditation phase of the generation stage and completion stage, when a practitioner of the completion stage who has gained the ability to touch the vital points of the body cultivates suchness in equipoise, it is necessary to meditate with the view placed at the forefront, but the analytical meditation of vipassanā is not done as it appears in other treatises. Therefore, at that time, while engaging in analytical meditation, from the top of the view
