In the future, it will come to pass in this way. In the present, it exists in this way, which is to seek. Seeking reasons has four types of reasons. Among them, the reason of dependence is: the arising of fruits depends on causes and conditions. This is also sought from the perspective of conventional truth, ultimate truth, and their respective bases. The reason of action is: like the action of fire burning, etc., all phenomena produce their own actions. This is also sought by saying, 'This is a phenomenon, this is the agent, and this phenomenon performs this action.' The reason of establishing validity is: establishing meaning without contradicting valid cognition. This is also sought by wondering whether there are the three valid cognitions of direct perception, inference, and reliable testimony in this. The reason of nature is: like the heat of fire and the wetness of water, etc., for their nature, one believes in the nature known in the world, the inconceivable nature, and the abiding nature, and does not think about other reasons for it being so; thus, it is sought. Having established it as six in this way, what the yogi should know is definitely three: the meaning of what is said, how many things are to be known, and how they are to be known. Among them, in terms of the first, seeking is the first. In terms of the second, there are two: seeking objects and seeking their own characteristics. In terms of the third, it is established to seek the remaining three and the common characteristics. The doors of the four vipashyanas mentioned earlier are three, and the way of seeking is said to be six, so the three doors and the six ways of seeking are included in the previous four. The four mental activities of diligently entering, etc., mentioned earlier, are also said in the Hearer's Vehicle to be common to both shamatha and vipashyana, so vipashyana also has four mental activities. The third has three: showing the meaning of cultivating vipashyana based on shamatha; which path of the Great or Small Vehicle is this system based on; and actually showing how to cultivate vipashyana based on shamatha. The first is: as it is said in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, first accomplish shamatha, and then cultivate vipashyana, as in the treatises of the Lord, the Yogācārabhūmi, the Śrāvakabhūmi, the *Leḍenjye*, Śāntideva, the three stages of meditation by Kamalaśīla, the Prajñāpāramitā instructions, and many other treatises.

It is also said in one of them. The meaning of these is: Previously, without focusing on the meaning of selflessness, but generating calm abiding by focusing on any object, later, cultivating by focusing on selflessness is not the superior insight, because calm abiding and superior insight are not distinguished from the perspective of the object. Moreover, in the oral instructions of the Prajnaparamita, it is also said: Focusing on the suchness of emptiness of both grasping and being grasped, after generating calm abiding previously, generating superior insight by analytical meditation by focusing on that very object. The noble Asanga also spoke of superior insight focusing on the suchness of things, and said that after generating calm abiding previously, relying on it, one cultivates superior insight with the aspect of tranquility and grossness. Moreover, it is said to be the common path of both internal and external, and both ordinary and noble beings. Therefore, if one has not previously attained calm abiding and is newly practicing, one cannot practice by examining one's own object in various ways, except by placing one's mind single-pointedly on any object. If one does as the former, it will be accomplished, but if one does as the latter, calm abiding is impossible to accomplish. If one has previously accomplished calm abiding, then, rather than merely prolonging the habit of abiding as before, one should use wisdom to distinguish the meaning of suchness or the suchness of things, and engage in analytical meditation when appropriate. In the end, one can induce a special samadhi of single-pointedness. Therefore, through it, one can accomplish a very powerful samadhi of single-pointedness, which the former cannot do, so analytical meditation is praised. That method of practice is the way of relying on seeking calm abiding previously and later cultivating superior insight. Therefore, even if the object like selflessness is one, there will be two reasons why the methods of cultivating calm abiding and superior insight are different, and that is the general reason. In particular, the superior insight with the aspect of tranquility and grossness that distinguishes the faults and virtues of the upper and lower realms, and the superior insight with the aspect of selflessness that cultivates by examining the meaning of selflessness with wisdom, because it is necessary to generate strong conviction and stability, it has great power to abandon each of its objects to be abandoned. Superior insight focusing on the suchness of things is the aspect of tranquility and grossness that abandons manifest afflictions.
