Thus it is said. In short, if one attains pliancy, even if one wants to strive to abandon afflictions, it is like a person unwilling to work starting to work, it is difficult to engage with a dull mind, and the body and mind become incapable. But when the state of the body and mind being incapable disappears, the body and mind will become very easy to use. This state of the body and mind being completely capable, from the initial attainment of dhyana, gradually produces small parts, and as it gradually increases, it will eventually become pliancy and one-pointed quiescence. Moreover, initially it is difficult to perceive because it is small, and later it will become easy to perceive, as stated in the *Śrāvakabhūmi*. The premonition of the arising of pliancy that is fully characterized and easy to examine is: the person who strives to practice dhyana will feel that their head is heavy and stiff, but this is not an uncomfortable heaviness. As soon as this feeling arises, they will immediately be free from the bad state of mind that hinders the enjoyment of abandoning afflictions, and its antidote, mental pliancy, will arise first. The *Śrāvakabhūmi* says: 'When the state of mind being one-pointed, which is coarse and easy to examine, and the pliancy of mind and body are about to arise without delay, the feeling of heaviness in the head will arise, which is a premonition, but this is not a harmful characteristic.' As soon as this feeling arises, it will immediately abandon the bad state of mind that belongs to the side of afflictions, which hinders the enjoyment of abandoning afflictions, and its antidote, mental workability and mental pliancy, will also arise. And so on. After that, relying on the power of the pliancy of mental workability, as the cause of the arising of physical pliancy, the wind runs in the body. When the wind pervades all parts of the body, it will be free from the bad state of the body, and the antidote to the bad state of the body, physical pliancy, will arise. Moreover, the body will appear to be completely relaxed and filled with the power of workable wind. As the *Śrāvakabhūmi* says: 'After this feeling arises, the winds of the great elements, which are in accordance with the arising of physical pliancy, will run in the body. When these winds run, they will be free from the bad state of the body that belongs to the side of afflictions, which hinders the enjoyment of abandoning afflictions, and its antidote

O, when the body is completely trained, all parts of the body appear to be full and complete. Thus it is said. Among them, complete pliancy of the body is a very pleasing tactile sensation within the body, but it is not a mental factor. The scholar Blo-brtan said: If the special characteristic of the body's tactile sensation is occupied by joy, it should be known as complete pliancy of the body. If the mind is joyful, the body will become completely pliant, as it is said in the Sutra. Thus it is said. Thus, when complete pliancy of the body first arises, due to the power of the wind, a great feeling of happiness arises in the body, and from this, an extremely excellent feeling of joy and happiness will also arise in the mind. After that, the power of the complete pliancy that first arose will gradually decrease. That is not because the complete pliancy is exhausted and disappears, but because the coarse pliancy makes the mind too agitated, so after it disappears, the unwavering complete pliancy, which is as thin as a shadow, will produce a situation that corresponds to Samadhi. The fleeting joy in the mind also disappears, and from then on, the mind stably abides on the object of focus, and one obtains the cessation that is driven by great joy and is free from non-pacification. As it is said in the Śrāvakabhūmi: "When it first arises, the mind is associated with joy, the mind is associated with extremely pleasant sensations, and the mind is associated with the most extreme joy, and it will also appear to be associated with the object of focus and manifest joy." After that, the power of complete pliancy that first arose will gradually become very subtle, and the complete pliancy on the body will become like a shadow. The joy in the mind will also be abandoned, and the mind will be stable near cessation, and will enter the object of focus in a completely peaceful manner. Thus it is said. If such a thing occurs, it is said that one has obtained cessation that is included in the application of mind and the preliminary stage of the first Dhyana, and therefore one has obtained the small application of mind of the Samāhita-bhūmi. In the second part, there are two sections: the actual signs of having application of mind, and the explanation of resolving doubts. The first is: The signs by which oneself or others can recognize the attainment of application of mind are: the person who has attained such application of mind has obtained a small portion of the mind, body, and complete pliancy of mind, which are included in the form aggregate, and the fourfold one-pointedness, and has the ability to subdue afflictions through the path of tranquility or coarseness, or the path with a true form, and quickly when entering into Samadhi internally.
