Pages 301 to 400. Pages 301 to 400. There are two. Lethargy is any of the non-virtuous and obscured but unspecified, and is only a part of ignorance. The great treatises say that in order to eliminate sinking, one should meditate on objects of joy such as images and appearances, and thus uplift the mind. This prevents the mind from being unclear like being covered in darkness and the lowering of the mind's grasping. Therefore, both clarity of the object and firmness of grasping are necessary. Excitement is easy to recognize, but sinking is difficult to know because it is not clearly identified in the reliable great treatises, and it is also very important because it is easy to mistake it for faultless samadhi. Therefore, one should carefully examine it with meticulous intelligence on the basis of experience, as stated in the Stages of Meditation, and recognize it. Secondly, it is not enough to just have an understanding of sinking and excitement. When meditating, one needs to be able to generate mindfulness that knows exactly whether sinking and excitement have arisen or not. That is, by gradually generating strong mindfulness, let alone being able to generate mindfulness that immediately recognizes sinking and excitement when they arise, one must generate mindfulness of awareness from the moment they are not actually arising but are preparing to arise. As it is said in the latter two Stages of Meditation: "If you see that the mind is sinking or suspect that it is sinking," and "If you see that the mind is excited or suspect that it is excited." Until such mindfulness is generated, even if you decide that there is no sinking and excitement from here to there and that the meditation is faultless, you will not progress because you cannot be sure even if sinking and excitement arise, because strong mindfulness has not been generated. As it is said in the Middle Beyond: "The realization of sinking and excitement." Therefore, mindfulness is necessary to realize sinking and excitement. Thus, if mindfulness that makes it impossible not to know when sinking and excitement arise is not generated, then even if you meditate for a long time, you will not notice when sinking and excitement arise, and time will pass with subtle sinking and excitement. So how do you generate mindfulness? The method of cultivating mindfulness taught earlier is one of the most important factors. In this way, if you can generate continuous mindfulness, you can prevent forgetting the object and wandering, thereby preventing sinking and excitement.
