Reciting scriptures, observing directions and constellations, and washing the face with clean water are all explained in the context of listening. If dullness is very slight and occurs only occasionally, tighten the mind's grip and meditate diligently. If dullness is thick and occurs repeatedly, suspend meditation and apply various antidotes as appropriate, and meditate again when the dullness has cleared. If the object on which the mind is held is not clear, and the mind feels as if it is covered by darkness, whether this state is slight or severe, one can counteract it by holding the sign of light, such as a lamp, fire, or sunlight, and repeatedly familiarizing oneself with it, which will generate great clarity of mind. Excitement is when the mind runs after objects such as forms and sounds due to attachment. For this, one should bring to mind objects of disillusionment, which are the cause of gathering the mind inward. As soon as excitement subsides, settle again in equanimity. The Essence of Madhyamaka says: 'Excitement, impermanence, etc., are pacified by attention.' And 'Distraction to the sign of distraction, is gathered by seeing faults.' If excitement is strong or lasts for a long time, temporarily let go of meditation and cultivate renunciation, which is essential, rather than letting the mind wander. If excitement is not too great, gather the distracted mind and place it on the object. The Condensed Perfection says: 'Whenever the mind becomes excited, reverse it by the method of calm abiding.' For an excited mind, do not bring to mind objects that are pleasing and delightful, for that is the cause of outward distraction. Secondly, the common causes of both dullness and excitement are: not guarding the doors of the senses, not moderating food, not striving in the yoga of not sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night, and not abiding in mindfulness. The causes of dullness are: too much sleep, too much relaxation in holding the object, too much reliance on calm abiding without balancing insight, the mind being like darkness, and not liking to focus on the object. The causes of excitement are: little renunciation, too strict holding of the object, not being accustomed to diligence, and the mind being distracted by thoughts of relatives, etc. Therefore, even subtle aspects of dullness and excitement should be recognized with mindfulness.

Since all scattering and distraction, etc., down to the subtle level, must be completely prevented, if one thinks that even if one tries to prevent them at the beginning, they cannot be prevented, and therefore abandons the effort; and if one thinks that since those distractions do not have a strong and very long continuity, and since they are short and weak and do not accumulate karma, there is no need to prevent them, then one will not be able to accomplish pure samadhi. This is because it goes against the way of accomplishing samadhi that was established by Lord Maitreya, etc. Therefore, withdraw the mind from scattering, place it on the object of focus within, and look for a place to settle. Once a place to settle has been found, alternately guard against sinking and excitement, thereby producing the sharpness of clarity. By alternately doing these two, one can accomplish faultless samadhi. Do not trust in mere clarity that lacks the sharpness of holding. Secondly, as previously explained, even subtle sinking and excitement should be prevented, so that when one meditates in this way, and the mind enters into a state of equanimity without any unevenness, either sinking or excitement will occur. If one then engages in fabrication or effort, that is a fault of samadhi, and therefore one should meditate on equanimity as an antidote to it. The way in which fabrication or effort becomes a fault is as follows: if the mind contracts inward or sinks, one should elevate it. By meditating in this way, when one has gained confidence that sinking and excitement will not occur in each appropriate session, one should engage in and maintain great guarding against sinking and excitement, just as one did at the beginning. If one does this, the mind will become distracted, so at that time one needs to know how to relax. That is to say, it is the effort that is relaxed, not the sharpness of holding. Therefore, this meditation on equanimity is not done at all times when sinking and excitement have not arisen, but only after the momentum of sinking and excitement has subsided. For there is no equanimity at a time when the momentum of sinking and excitement has not subsided. So, what is equanimity? Among the three types of feeling, immeasurable, and equanimity of formation, this is the last. Its essence is as explained in the Hearer's Ground: the equanimity of mind, calmness, natural entry, and attainment of serviceability with respect to the object of focus in the aspects of calm abiding and special insight. When such equanimity has been attained, when meditating on samadhi, at times when sinking and excitement have not arisen, one should manifest that equanimity and not apply too much effort. These are from the Discrimination of the Middle and Extremes. There...
