Sapa'o. Secondly, there are six powers: the power of hearing, the power of thinking, the power of mindfulness, the power of awareness, the power of diligence, and the power of complete familiarity. How do these powers accomplish the mind? The power of hearing accomplishes the mind of settling, following only the instructions heard from others on how to settle the mind on the object. At first, it is only placing the mind on the object, because one has not repeatedly thought about it and become accustomed to it. The power of thinking accomplishes the mind of continuous settling, because by repeatedly thinking about and guarding the continuity of that which was initially placed on the object, one first obtains the ability to slightly extend the continuity. The power of mindfulness accomplishes the two minds of intermittent settling and close settling, because when distracted and scattered from the object, one remembers the previous object and gathers inward, and from the beginning, one generates the power of mindfulness so that the mind does not wander from the object. The power of awareness accomplishes the two minds of taming and pacifying, because awareness recognizes the faults of scattering and the signs of near afflictions, and by seeing them as faults, it prevents the mind from scattering to those two. The power of diligence accomplishes the two minds of completely pacifying and making one-pointed, because even if subtle scattering and near afflictions arise, one abandons them with effort and does not accept them, and by doing so, dullness and excitement, etc., cannot obstruct samadhi, and thus samadhi that arises continuously is accomplished. The power of familiarity accomplishes the mind of equanimous settling, because by the power of extreme familiarity with the previous ones, samadhi that enters effortlessly and naturally arises. These are just like the intention of the place of hearing, so do not trust explanations that differ from this. If one obtains the ninth mind, for example, if one is very accustomed to reciting scriptures, etc., when the intention to recite arises at first and one recites, even if the mind wanders elsewhere in the middle, the recitation itself will not be interrupted, but will come effortlessly. Similarly, initially, with the mindfulness of placing the mind on the object, one settles equanimously once, and then if mindfulness and awareness are not continuously relied upon, samadhi

If it continues uninterruptedly, it can produce a state that can be maintained for a long time. If mindfulness and awareness are continuous, there is no need to rely on effort, which is called "with effort" or "with exertion." In order to generate this state, one must first rely on the effort of mindfulness and awareness, so that unfavorable factors such as dullness and agitation cannot hinder it, and a samadhi that can be maintained for a long time must be generated, and this is precisely the eighth consciousness. Both this eighth consciousness and the ninth consciousness are similarly not hindered by unfavorable factors of samadhi such as dullness and agitation. However, for the eighth consciousness, one must rely on mindfulness and awareness continuously, so it is called "with effort" or "with exertion." In order to generate this state, one must prevent subtle dullness and agitation, etc., and not accept them even as soon as they arise, so the seventh consciousness is needed. In order to generate this state, one must recognize the faults of being disturbed by conceptual thoughts and near afflictions, and not be shaken by them, and one needs to have the powerful strength of awareness, so the fifth and sixth consciousnesses are needed. Because these two are achieved through the power of awareness. In order to generate this state, even if one is distracted from the object, one must quickly recall the object; and one needs the mindfulness that does not stray from the object from the beginning, so the third and fourth consciousnesses are needed. Because these two are achieved through these two kinds of mindfulness. In order to generate this state, one first needs to settle the mind on the object, and one needs not to stray from the object that is settled, so the first two consciousnesses are generated first. Thus, in short, one must first follow the instructions that have been heard, and settle one's mind well. Then, for this state of settling, one must repeatedly contemplate it, and extend the duration of continuity through a way that can be sustained slightly. Then, if mindfulness weakens and one becomes distracted, one must quickly gather oneself, and quickly recall the forgotten object; then one must also generate strong mindfulness, and generate the power of mindfulness that does not stray from the object from the beginning. After the power of mindfulness is achieved, through seeing the faults of dullness and agitation, etc., which stray outward from the object, generate strong awareness that guards against them. Then, even if one is disturbed by subtle forgetfulness, one must immediately recognize it and cut off the continuity; after cutting it off, make the continuity that is not hindered by unfavorable factors longer and longer.
