Generating the power of effort to dispel distraction. Once that arises, diligently practice, and when it becomes habitual, without effort, the ninth mind that enters samadhi is accomplished. Therefore, before attaining the ninth mind, a yogi must make the effort to place the mind in samadhi. Having attained the ninth mind, even without deliberately making the effort to settle, the mind will naturally enter samadhi. Even if such a ninth mind is attained, if lightness is not attained, as will be explained later, it still cannot be considered to have attained tranquility, let alone insight. Third, regarding the four mental engagements in the nine stages of mental abiding as explained in the Hearer's Ground (Śrāvakabhūmi), if we explain it according to that: In the first two minds, effort is required to restrain, so it is entering with restraint; then, in the case of the five minds, because dullness and excitement interrupt and long sessions cannot be maintained, it is entering intermittently; then, in the eighth mind, dullness and excitement cannot interrupt, and long sessions can be maintained, so it is entering without interruption; then, in the ninth mind, there is no interruption and no need for continuous effort, so the mental engagement is entering without effort. So, in the case of the first two minds, there is intermittent entry, and in the case of the middle five minds, there is also a need for restraint. Why are the first two minds not said to have the mental engagement of intermittent entry, and the middle five minds not said to have the mental engagement of entering with restraint? Because in the first two minds, the time the mind enters samadhi and does not enter samadhi, the latter lasts very long. In the middle five minds, the time abiding in samadhi is very long, so the latter is called interruption of samadhi. The former is not called that. Therefore, although both have entering with restraint, the presence or absence of intermittent entry is different. Therefore, these five minds are not placed in the mental engagement of entering with restraint. Regarding this, the Summary of the Perfection of Wisdom says: The yogi who does not interrupt, should diligently cultivate meditation, again and again, if weary, fire will not arise from drilling wood, so too is the way of yoga, do not abandon until excellence is attained. Thus, practice. Third has three, tranquility accomplished and

Showing the boundaries of accomplishment. In general, showing the way to travel the path through śamatha. In particular, showing the way to travel the mundane path. The first part has two parts: showing the actual meaning, and including the signs of doubt with attention. The first part has two parts: showing whether or not śamatha is attained from the perspective of whether or not complete pliability is attained, and showing how śamatha is accomplished after complete pliability is attained. The first part is: As previously stated, the ninth mind, free from subtle agitation and sinking, is able to maintain long sessions. Moreover, if one attains a samādhi that spontaneously arises without relying on the effort of continuous mindfulness and awareness, is it considered that one has attained śamatha or not? Attaining this samādhi has two aspects: attaining pliability and not attaining pliability. If pliability is not attained, then it is similar to śamatha, but it is not actual śamatha. As it says in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "Bhagavan, what should be called the mental activity of a bodhisattva who focuses his mind on the mind, and who has not attained physical and mental pliability? Maitreya, it is not śamatha, but it should be called being in accordance with the aspiration that is similar to śamatha." The *Sūtrālaṃkāra* also says: "From habituation, it does not scatter. Then, his body and mind become very pliable. Having attained attention, it is called." That is to say, attention here is śamatha. The *Bhāvanākrama II* also says: "Thus, having practiced śamatha, when the body and mind become pliable, and when the mind becomes master over the object of focus as desired, then it should be known that śamatha is accomplished." It is clearly stated. The *Prajñāpāramitā Upadeśa* also says: "Here, a bodhisattva dwells alone in a secluded place and attends to the meaning as he has thought. Abandoning the expression of the mind, he attends to the appearance of the mind itself many times. As long as physical and mental pliability have not arisen, it is attention that is similar to śamatha. When it arises, then it is śamatha." So, to which level does the samādhi before pliability has arisen belong?
