From the state of being workable, all purposes are accomplished. Abandoning the five faults and relying on the eight applications, it arises from the cause of practice. Laziness and the instructions, forgetting and sinking and excitement, as well as non-application and application, these are considered the five faults. The place and abiding therein, the cause and the result itself. Not forgetting the object of focus, realizing sinking and excitement, manifestly applying effort to abandon them, and abiding naturally when calm. As it is said. Among these, abiding therein means, exerting effort to eliminate unfavorable factors is abiding therein, from which arises the Samadhi of mental pliancy. This is also the basis or place of miraculous powers that accomplish all purposes such as clairvoyance, so it accomplishes all purposes. Such Samadhi arises from the cause of abandoning the five faults and relying on the eight applications. The five faults are: during the time of application, laziness is a fault, because one does not apply oneself to Samadhi. During the time of striving in Samadhi, forgetting the instructions is a fault, because if one forgets the object of focus, the mind cannot be equally placed on the object of focus. During the time of equal placement, sinking and excitement are faults, because these two cause the mind's pliancy to disappear. During the time when sinking and excitement arise, non-effort is a fault, because it does not pacify these two. During the time of being free from sinking and excitement, the mind of application is a fault. If sinking and excitement are made into one, then there are five, but if they are separated, then it is also said to be six in the stages of meditation. Among the eight applications for abandoning their antidotes, there are four antidotes for laziness, namely: faith, aspiration, effort, and pliancy. Then, the antidotes for forgetfulness, sinking and excitement, non-application and application, in order, are: mindfulness, awareness, the mind of application, and equanimity of natural abiding, these have been previously explained. This is the commonality of all instructions for cultivating the Samadhi of one-pointedness of mind, having been made free from sinking and excitement by mindfulness and awareness. Therefore, do not think that this is a special Dharma of the Characteristic Vehicle (referring to Sutra), and that Mantra is not needed. Because it is also taught in many Tantras of Unexcelled Yoga.

That is why. Secondly, there are three aspects: the actual sequence of the arising of calm abiding; the way it is accomplished through the six powers; and the way it has four mental engagements. The first aspect has nine parts: Placing the mind on this and that means gathering the mind from all external objects and directing it inward to the object. As it says in the Ornament of Sutras: "Having placed the mind on the object." Like that. Continuously placing means that the mind initially placed does not stray elsewhere but continuously remains on that object. It should not be allowed to continuously wander. Like that. Replacing means that if it wanders outward due to forgetfulness, one recognizes that and again fastens it to that object. Having quickly realized the wandering, one should again replace it on that. Like that. Closely placing means, as it says in the Instructions on the Perfection of Wisdom: "The mind is naturally vast, so repeatedly gather it and make it subtle, and place it higher and higher." It is explained as: "An intelligent person should gather the mind inward higher and higher." This is in accordance with that. Taming means thinking about the qualities of samadhi and rejoicing in samadhi. Then, because of seeing the qualities, tame the mind in samadhi. Like that. Pacifying means looking at wandering as a fault and pacifying the dislike of samadhi. Because of seeing the faults of wandering, pacify the dislike of that. Like that. Completely pacifying means pacifying the arising of attachment, displeasure, drowsiness, sleep, and so on. Attachment, displeasure, and so on, pacify the arising in that way. Like that. Making it one-pointed means striving for the sake of entering effortlessly. Then, a diligent person with vows, with a mind of application, obtains self-arising. Like that. Equanimity means that when the mind has become equal, one lets it be, as it says in the Stages of Meditation. And, making it one stream, through habituation, it spontaneously accomplishes, naturally enters, and obtains freedom, as it says in the Instructions on the Perfection of Wisdom. Like that also: Because of habituation, one does not make effort. Like that. These names for the nine states of mind are from the First Stages of Meditation: This path of calm abiding is explained in the Perfection of Wisdom and so on. It is done as quoted, and so on.
