Since the arising of dullness and excitement is not felt for a long time, in order to easily realize dullness and excitement, if the awareness of dullness and excitement when mindfulness is weakened, and the awareness of dullness and excitement when mindfulness is not weakened, are compared and observed in terms of the length of time, it will be very clear. Considering this, it is also said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "When mindfulness from the gate of the mind, becomes the place of protection, then mindfulness will arise." It is also said in the Madhyantavibhaga commentary: "Mindfulness is the cause of awareness." One cause is that the mind focuses on the image taken of the deity, etc., or focuses on the grasping aspect of experience, awareness, clarity, etc. As mentioned earlier, with the help of mindfulness, observe whether the mind is distracted to other places, thereby holding the mind. This is considered the key to cultivating awareness. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "The state of body and mind, should be repeatedly observed, in short, this is the characteristic of guarding awareness." Therefore, this can generate awareness of knowing from the preparation to generate dullness and excitement, and the way to cultivate mindfulness can prevent the forgetfulness of wandering distraction, so the main points must be well grasped. Second, as mentioned earlier, by cultivating mindfulness and awareness well, mindfulness becomes strong, and even subtle dullness and excitement can be detected by awareness, so there will be no fault of not being able to identify the occurrence of dullness and excitement. However, if after those two arise, one does not immediately take the effort to prevent them, but takes them as they are, without effort or inaction, this is a major fault of samadhi. Therefore, in order to counteract it, one should practice the mind called "attention" or "effort." This has two aspects: first, recognizing attention and how to prevent dullness and excitement, and second, recognizing the cause of dullness and excitement arising from what it depends on. First, in the Abhidharmasamuccaya it says: "What is attention? The mind clearly constructs, it is the action of the mind, it is the action of causing the mind to enter into virtue, non-virtue, and neutrality." The meaning of this sentence is that just as iron moves involuntarily under the influence of a magnet, the mental factor that moves and propels the mind into any of the three: virtue, non-virtue, and neutrality, is attention. Here, whether it is dullness or excite-

If so, one should take hold of the mind that focuses on abandoning dullness and agitation. How then does one prevent dullness and agitation? Mental dullness occurs when the mind is too withdrawn inward, losing its grasp on the object of focus. For this, one should bring to mind an object of joy that causes the mind to radiate outward. This should be like the form of the Buddha, not a joy that gives rise to afflictions. Alternatively, one can bring to mind the sign of luminosity, such as sunlight, and when the dullness clears, immediately grasp the object of focus firmly and cultivate it, as stated in the First Stage of Meditation. One should not meditate on a dispiriting object, as discouragement is a cause for drawing the mind inward. By analyzing and elaborating on the object that one wishes to examine with discriminating wisdom, dullness can also be reversed. The Compendium of Perfections states: "By the power of diligence in higher vision, if one becomes dejected, one should also praise oneself." Thus, dullness or dejection is dullness caused by a lowering of the grasp on the object of focus, and dejection is caused by being too withdrawn inward. Therefore, it is reversed by elevating the grasp and expanding the object of focus. The Essence of the Middle Way states: "Dejection, the object of focus is vast, by meditating, one becomes expansive." It also says: "Dejection also, by diligence, seeing the benefits, one should praise oneself." The most important antidote to preventing dullness is to contemplate the benefits of the Three Jewels and the mind of enlightenment, as well as the qualities of the importance of obtaining leisure and endowment, etc., just as pouring cold water on a sleepy face can make awareness clear. This depends on the experience gained through analytical meditation that individually examines the aspects of benefit. If one relies on the antidote of meditating on luminosity for the cause of dullness arising, which is torpor and sleep, and the mind with a dark appearance that draws forth the two, then the dullness that depends on them will not arise, and what has arisen will be reversed. For this, one should adopt the posture of walking and keep the sign of luminosity in mind, repeatedly practicing it. Alternatively, one can elevate the mind by any of the six recollections of the Three Jewels, moral discipline, generosity, and deities, or other objects that bring joy to the mind. And reveal the faults of torpor and sleep.
