It is not to show non-existence. That is to say, although emptiness exists, it is not truly established. Therefore, that scripture is to prevent saying that emptiness also does not exist by negating the truth that is to be refuted, and to prevent saying that it is not necessary to realize the emptiness of the ultimate reality in order to abandon the exhaustion of afflictions. Therefore, it can be used as a basis. Therefore, in the praise itself, it says: Impermanence, emptiness, suffering, with three actions, tame the mind. The most supreme is that the dharma that tames the mind is without self-nature. And, all dharmas are without self-nature, one should meditate in the realm of dharma. Thus, the very absence of self-nature of these dharmas being established by self-nature is the realm of dharma to be meditated upon, and meditating on it itself is said to be the most supreme of taming the mind. Therefore, since the dharmas that appear in this way are nihilistic emptiness without being established by self-nature, how can one lead the direction of placing the emptiness that is separated from that as the emptiness to be meditated upon, which is truly established? That is like grasping that there is no snake in the east, and in order to eliminate the suffering of fear, showing that there is no snake in the east does not become its antidote. One must show that there is a tree in the west, which is like saying that sentient beings suffer by clinging to what appears in this way as true, and in order to eliminate that suffering, realizing that the basis on which one clings to as true is without truth does not become an antidote. One must show that another meaningless basis exists as true, because that is what it is for. Third, there are four aspects: the basis for distinguishing the two truths, the number of how they are distinguished, the meaning of distinguishing in that way, and explaining the meaning of each distinction separately. First, regarding the basis of distinction of the two truths, there are many views among the former ones, but here, in the Compendium of Trainings, it says: What is to be known is also exhausted here in the conventional truth and the ultimate truth. Therefore, what is to be known is the basis of distinction. Second, as the Root Wisdom says: The conventional truth of the world, and the truth of the ultimate meaning. Thus, it is divided into two: conventional truth and ultimate truth. Third, being divided into two, these two must be different, so what is the way of being different? To this, many ancient people thought that, like a pot and a blanket, the essence is different, and like what is made and impermanent, etc.

For example, two things that have the same essence but different aspects are different causes, and both are real things. A difference in which either one is not a real thing is a difference that negates sameness. Because there are three kinds of difference, it is said that the two truths are differences that negate sameness. Some, however, think that the two are the same in essence but different in aspect. In the Madhyamaka Aloka, it is said that the relationship of self and one is not contradictory even if it is not a real thing, which is good. Both the two different causes that are not real things, and the two in which either one is not a real thing, do not contradict the same essence but different aspects. In the commentary on the Entering the Middle Way, it is said that the self-nature of all things is shown to be of two kinds, namely, conventional and ultimate. Therefore, each phenomenon has two natures, conventional and ultimate. If the two truths are not the same in essence, then it is very unreasonable for the essences to be different, because the two have no essence, so they will become non-existent. Because existence is pervaded by either one or many essences. The Bodhicitta Commentary also says: Conventional is said to be emptiness, emptiness alone is conventional, without which it will certainly not arise, like action and impermanence, etc. It is also said that if something like a sprout is different in essence from its ultimate reality, then it is also different in essence from its true emptiness, and the sprout will become truly established. Therefore, the essence is not different, so the essence is the same. A sprout is its own true emptiness, but it is not its own ultimate truth. Some treatises say that the two truths are neither one nor different. Some refer to the one and the other that are established by nature, and some refer to the fact that neither the essence is different nor the aspect is the same. The fourth has three: conventional truth, ultimate truth, and the definite number of the two truths. The first has three: explaining the meaning of the words conventional and truth, the definition of conventional truth, and the classification of conventional. The first is: In the Clear Words, it is said that conventional has three explanations: obscuring reality, the meaning of mutual dependence, and worldly terms. The latter is an explanation of the characteristics of what is said and what is said, and knowledge and what is to be known. Therefore, the terms of the object are knowledge and speech.
