Because it is said that emptiness is established by its own nature, emptiness established by its own nature is the meaning of dependent origination, and it shows that it is not emptiness by merely preventing arising. It is also said in the Root Wisdom: 'Whatever is dependently originated is empty of inherent existence.' Because of the reason for arising dependently, it is said that inherent existence is pacified or empty. Therefore, according to the Madhyamaka school, it is necessary to say that it is unborn, etc., merely by relying on arising. Whatever ignorant nonsense is spoken, those are also to be refuted, and should be known. Such a reason for dependent origination is highly praised. As it is said in the Vimalakīrti Nirdeśa Sūtra: 'The wise understand the Dharma of dependent origination, and will never rely on extreme views.' It means that by truly understanding dependent origination, one will not rely on views that cling to extremes. It is said in the Entering the Middle Way: 'Because things arise dependently, these thoughts cannot be examined. Therefore, this reasoning of dependent origination cuts off all nets of evil views.' This is the unsurpassed characteristic of the great master Nāgārjuna and his son. Therefore, here we will discuss the reasoning of dependent origination among various reasonings. Here, there are two main obstacles to pure views: one is the eternalist view and the additive view, which are targeted by the belief in reality that holds things to be true. The second is that the measure of what is to be refuted is not grasped and is too excessive, resulting in the certainty of cause and effect and dependent origination not being established in one's own system, so that there is no way to distinguish between what is and what is not, which is the nihilistic view and the slanderous view. These two are based on the reasoning derived from the certainty that this result arises from this cause and condition. When inherent existence is negated, it will be abandoned without exception, because the certainty of reasoning can completely refute the nihilistic view, and the certainty of the meaning of the vow can completely refute the eternalist view. Therefore, external things such as sprouts, and internal things such as formations, arise in sequence depending on seeds and ignorance, etc. If this is the case, then it is unreasonable for them to be established by their own characteristics, because their own

If it is established by its own nature, then it must be established that it has an independent nature of its own. Because it contradicts dependence on causes and conditions. As it says in the Hundred Treatises: That which arises in dependence on something, that is not independent. All of these are without independence, therefore, there is no self. And so on. This means that persons and vases, etc., are also designated in dependence on their own aggregates. Therefore, it should be known that they are not established by their own nature. These are the two aspects of the reasoning of dependent arising. If it is born in dependence and designated in dependence, then it is not one in essence with that on which it depends. If they were one, then all actions and agents would become one. Those two are also not different entities established by their own nature. If they were different, then the connection could be prevented, so it contradicts relying on it. As it also says in the Root Wisdom: That which arises in dependence on something, that is not exactly that, nor is it different from that. Therefore, it is neither annihilation nor permanence. And as it also says in the Praise Beyond the World: Suffering is done by oneself, done by others, and done by both. Theorists desire without cause, you say it arises in dependence. Whatever arises in dependence, you accept that as emptiness. Things are not independent, the lion's roar of you, the unequaled one. Thus, it is said that the reasoning of dependent arising prevents clinging to the extremes of one and different, permanent and annihilation, and the four extremes of arising. Thus, after certainty is drawn from emptiness, which is empty of all objects of fixation on characteristics, the certainty of the connection of cause and effect is not abandoned. Therefore, reliance on abandoning and taking is highly praised. As it says in the Commentary on the Bodhichitta: Knowing that all phenomena are empty, whoever relies on actions and results, this is more wonderful than wonderful, this is more marvelous than marvelous. As such, it is necessary to distinguish between existing by nature and merely existing, and between not existing by its own characteristics and not existing at all. As it says in the Commentary on the Entrance: Even though it is known that images have no nature of their own, the aspects of cause and effect are still established. What wise person, knowing that forms and feelings, etc., are established as causes, and established as existing without difference from effects, would only fixate on them as existing? Self-nature.
