Where is emptiness? Therefore, the vague appearances that arise simply from realizing it are definitely not like illusions. Therefore, when analyzed with reason, it seems that there is not even a little bit of a way of abiding on things like people that are established by their own nature. And, relying on that, it is not difficult for these appearances to appear vaguely. Like that, everyone who believes in the Madhyamaka school and hears even a little bit of Dharma that teaches the nature of no self-existence will have that feeling. The difficulty is that the self-existence established by its own nature is completely refuted, and from the very person and so on without self-existence, establishing them as the one who accumulates karma and the one who experiences the result, one must have a deep conviction from the bottom of one's heart. If the combination of the two that can be established on that remains only on the extreme of nihilism, then the view of Madhyamaka is very difficult to obtain. Therefore, when analyzing with the reasoning that examines that very suchness, because birth and so on are not found, what is prevented is self-birth and so on, not preventing all birth and cessation and so on. If that is prevented, it will become like a rabbit's horn and a barren woman's child, empty of all function. It is said that there is a fault that all interdependent actions are not justified by merely leaving behind an appearance like an illusion. As it says in the Four Hundred Verses: "If it is like that, how is it? Existence is not like an illusion." In its commentary, it says: "If you see dependent arising as it is, it will become like a magic trick, but it is not like the child of a barren woman. If this analysis completely prevents all births and wants to show that there is no arising of conditioned phenomena, then in that case, it will not become like an illusion, but will be measured by things like the child of a barren woman. Because of the fear that there will be no dependent arising, it will not conform to those, but will conform to illusions and so on that do not contradict it." And it says: "Therefore, when completely analyzed in this way, since the self-nature of things cannot be established, the illusion-like appearance itself will become the remainder for each thing." Therefore, merely clinging to the appearance as an illusion-like dependent arising is a faulty clinging to illusion.

No. It is a fault to grasp illusory appearances as being established by their own nature and as being true. As it is also said in the King of Samādhi Sūtra: "The beings of existence are like a dream; in this, no one is born, and no one dies. Sentient beings, people, and life cannot be found; these dharmas are like bubbles and trees in water. Like an illusion, like lightning in the sky, like the moon in water, and like a mirage. Without contradiction, even after dying in this world, there is no migration to another world, and although there is no place to go, the actions done are never wasted. In samsara, the fruits of black and white will ripen." Thus, when searching with the reasoning that investigates that very nature, even a particle of a person who can be examined, such as birth, death, and transmigration, cannot be found, but the dharmas are like illusions, and the fruits of black and white will arise. It is necessary to have such an understanding. Furthermore, in equipoise, it is not the case that one cultivates by placing the view that has thoroughly decided the way things are on top, but rather, by the power of merely firmly gaining the one-pointedness of not grasping the mind in any object, when one arises from that, the appearances of mountains and so on do not appear as solid as before, but appear without luster, like a rainbow or thin smoke. This is also not appearing like the illusion spoken of in the scriptures, because it is appearing as emptiness with an obstructive and coarse thing, and not appearing as emptiness with the nature of the object appearing as being established by its own nature. And, the obstructive and solid does not exist, and it is absolutely not permissible to take it as the meaning of emptiness without self-nature. If it is not like that, then when grasping rainbows and other distinctions as the basis, it will not be possible to give rise to the clinging to truth, and when grasping obstructive distinctions as the basis, it will become the fault of not being able to generate the wisdom that realizes the absence of truth. Secondly, how then can the meaning of illusion appear without being mistaken? For example, just as one sees the illusory horse and elephant with eye consciousness, and based on the mental consciousness's certainty that there is no horse and elephant as they appear, one generates the certainty that what appears as a horse and elephant is an illusion or a false appearance, similarly, the fact that persons and so on appear unmistakably to nominal consciousness, and the fact that one ascertains with reasoning that that very person is empty of self-nature established by its own nature, based on these two, one generates the certainty that that person is an illusion or a false appearance.
