It is conventional truth! Thus, because of being controlled by the afflictive ignorance that is completely encompassed by the limbs of existence. It is said that ignorance is grasping at objects as true, and it is considered to be afflictive ignorance itself, so there are two ways of establishing the self-grasping of phenomena as afflictive obscurations and cognitive obscurations, and here it is according to the former way. This is also said by the noble father and sons. In the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness, it says: Whatever concept regards things born from causes and conditions as truly existent, the Teacher said that is ignorance, from which the twelve limbs arise. Because of truly seeing that things are empty, if one understands well that ignorance does not arise, that is the cessation of ignorance, therefore the twelve limbs also cease. It is said that to truly conceive of things is to grasp them as truly established or to grasp them as true. This is said in the Precious Garland: As long as there is grasping at the aggregates, so long will there be self-grasping. Just like that, it has the same meaning as saying that as long as the true grasping of the aggregates is not reversed, the view of annihilation will not turn back. The Four Hundred also says: Just as the body's faculties are in the body, ignorance pervades all, therefore, all afflictions are destroyed by destroying ignorance. If one sees dependent arising, ignorance will not arise, therefore, one should strive with all effort to speak only of this. It is said that the ignorance spoken of in this way is the time of identifying the ignorance that is one of the three poisons, so it is afflictive ignorance. And, in order to reverse that ignorance, it is said that one must realize the meaning of emptiness appearing as the meaning of dependent arising, and realize the meaning of profound dependent arising. Therefore, afflictive ignorance must be explained as the imputation of things as true, as explained in the commentary to that treatise. This way is following in the footsteps of Buddhapalita's explanation of the noble one's intention, and it is clearly explained by Chandrakirti. Second, like that, the ignorance of grasping at the two selves that was previously explained is also not commonly accepted by the proponents of inner and outer tenets, the imputed permanent, single, independent person, and the apprehended external objects appearing and so on, and the partless atoms of direction, and the gross that is accumulated from them, and the apprehending inner consciousness, etc.

The knowledge without temporal parts such as before and after is an indivisible moment, and the continuous stream of that knowledge, and the self-awareness of non-duality that is empty of such grasping and being grasped, which is considered to be true, is the imputed person and the self-grasping of phenomena. These are not dependent on whether or not the mind is transformed by philosophical tenets, but are common to all beings. The two types of innate self-grasping, which do not depend on the corruption of the mind by philosophical tenets and have followed since beginningless time, are taken here as the root of samsara. As it is said in the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds, "Many beings have spent countless eons as animals, yet they have not seen this unborn, permanent self. Even those with self-grasping see it." According to this reasoning, it is because innate ignorance binds all sentient beings in samsara, and because imputed ignorance is only present in those who assert philosophical tenets, it is not reasonable to be the root of samsara. It is extremely important to gain a definite understanding of this. If you do not understand it in this way, then when establishing it through view, you will mainly focus on establishing how innate ignorance grasps without understanding how to refute the objects of imputed grasping as its branch. Abandoning the refutation of the way innate ignorance grasps, when refuting the two selves, as mentioned earlier, you will only establish the selflessness that is established by those who assert philosophical tenets. Therefore, you must also meditate on only that much during meditation, because establishing through view is for the purpose of meditation. Therefore, even if it becomes manifest after meditation and you become accustomed to it, it will only amount to that much. If you think that by seeing that the two selves established by the grasping of imputation do not exist, you can reverse the innate afflictions, then it is too extreme. As it is said in the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds, "When one realizes selflessness, one abandons the permanent self, and this is not desired as a basis for self-grasping. Therefore, it is very strange to say that the knowledge of selflessness completely uproots the view of self." The commentary also says: In order to clarify this unrelated meaning through an example, it is said: Just as seeing a snake living in a crack in the wall of one's own house, one dispels doubts by saying that there is no elephant here, and thus one can eliminate the fear of snakes.
