It should be observed. Secondly, having thus obtained the mental application of the non-conceptual samadhi mentioned earlier, should one cultivate only that non-conceptual state with the distinctions of clarity and non-conceptuality, etc.? If asked, the generation of such samadhi in one's own mindstream is for the sake of generating insight (vipassanā) that subdues afflictions. If insight is not generated based on that, no matter how accustomed one becomes to that samadhi, one will not be able to abandon even the afflictions of the desire realm, let alone abandon all afflictions. Therefore, one should cultivate insight. There are two types of insight: insight that progresses through the worldly path, abandoning manifest afflictions, and insight that progresses through the supramundane path, abandoning the seeds of afflictions from their root. The former is the aspect of peace and coarseness, viewing the lower ground as coarse and the upper ground as peaceful. The latter is the practice of viewing the sixteen aspects of the four truths, such as impermanence. The main point mentioned in the place of hearing is the view of realizing the selflessness of the individual. Thus, whether non-Buddhists cultivate the path of peace and coarseness to abandon manifest afflictions, or Buddhists cultivate the meaning of selflessness to abandon the root of afflictions, the aforementioned calm abiding is initially necessary as the basis for both internal and external yogis to abandon afflictions. Moreover, any yogi of both the Great and Small Vehicles must accomplish that samadhi. Among Mahayana practitioners, all yogis of both Mantra and Paramita Vehicles must also accomplish that calm abiding. Therefore, this calm abiding is crucial as the basis for all yogis to progress on the path. For Buddhists, the former of the two insights is not indispensable, but the latter, the insight that realizes selflessness, is an indispensable limb. Furthermore, if one obtains the aforementioned calm abiding included in the preparatory stage of the first dhyana, even if one does not obtain the dhyanas above that or the formless calm abiding, one can still cultivate insight based on that, and thus be able to obtain liberation from all the bonds of samsara. If one does not realize and cultivate the suchness of selflessness, then the aforementioned calm abiding and the worldly insight based on it are of no

Because all manifest afflictions below the peak of existence are abandoned, even if the mind of the peak of existence is attained, it is not liberated from samsara. As it says in the Praiseworthy Praise: Those beings who are not inclined towards your Dharma, blinded by ignorance, even if they go to the peak of existence, will still experience suffering and create karma. Those who follow your teachings, even if they have not attained the actual dhyana, will avert existence like burning away the eye-film of the demon. Therefore, even a yogi of unsurpassed yoga must generate vipashyana that focuses on all that exists with aspects of quiescence and roughness, and even if they do not generate shamatha through that, they must generate a shamatha. Moreover, the initial place of arising is when it arises during the generation stage. Third, here, from the ninth mind onwards until one has not attained attention, it is the first action of attention. After attention has been attained, meditating on the attention of discriminating individual characteristics with the desire to subdue afflictions is said in the Hearing Ground to be the first action of affliction subduing. If this explanation from the Hearing Ground is not well ascertained, then the lowest of the paths of dhyana and the formless realms is the proximity attainment of the first dhyana. Because the first of the six attentions explained there is the discriminating individual characteristics, it will be mistaken to think that the first mind that arises included by the proximity attainment is the discriminating
