Having understood this, one should diligently engage in practices such as giving. Without practice, one cannot attain enlightenment. So it is said. Practice also means taking vows and learning their precepts. Secondly, entering the path to Buddhahood requires a method that is not mistaken. No matter how much one strives on a mistaken path, there will be no result, just like pulling on a horn when wanting to milk a cow. Even if it is not mistaken, if the conditions are incomplete, effort will not yield results, just as a sprout will not grow if any of the seeds, water, or soil are missing, as stated in the Middle Stages of Meditation. So, what is it that has complete causes and conditions and is not mistaken? In the Manifestation of Perfect Enlightenment, it says: Lord of Secrets, the wisdom of omniscient knowledge arises from the root of compassion, arises from the cause of bodhicitta, and is perfected by skillful means. Compassion has already been explained. Bodhicitta is twofold: conventional and ultimate bodhicitta, and skillful means is the perfection of giving and so forth, as explained by the great scholar Kamalashila. Some, like the Chinese monk Hwashang, have inverted views on such a path, saying: Since it is conceptual thought, needless to say if it is evil thought, even if it is good thought, it binds one to samsara, so its result will not transcend samsara. It is like being bound by a golden chain and a rope, both white and black clouds obscure the sky, and either a white or black dog biting causes suffering. Therefore, abiding without any conceptualization is the path to enlightenment, and giving and discipline are taught for the sake of foolish beings who cannot meditate on such definitive meaning. Therefore, engaging in those practices after gaining definitive meaning is like a king becoming a commoner or searching for the tracks of an elephant after finding the elephant. Among them, Hwashang cited eighty sources from sutras praising non-conceptualization to prove his point. This person claimed that all skillful means are not the true path to Buddhahood, thus making a great slander. And because of preventing the practice of wisdom that individually discriminates emptiness, the heart of the Victorious One's teachings, this abandonment of the ultimate truth is what Kamalashila said:

Although the excellent path that pleases the Buddhas has been well propagated by properly preventing it with impeccable teachings and reasoning, there are still some who disregard the aspects of conduct such as guarding vows, abandoning them when practicing the path, acting as before. Some, apart from denigrating the aspect of skillful means, also have such an understanding of the view. Others abandon seeking the view of suchness with their individual discriminating wisdom, and instead seem to think that the Chinese meditation of not thinking about anything is good. This is not apparent even in the aspect of meditating on emptiness. Even if it is allowed to be meditating on emptiness, those who meditate well on the meaning of emptiness say that one should only meditate on emptiness, and that there is no need to meditate on the aspects of conduct that have conventional reality as their object. This contradicts all the scriptures and seems to be completely beyond the realm of reason. For the object to be attained by the Mahayanists is non-abiding nirvana. Of these, not abiding in samsara is accomplished by the wisdom that realizes suchness and the stages of the path based on ultimate truth, and the profound path, which are the accumulation of wisdom and the aspect of wisdom. Not abiding in peaceful nirvana is because it must be accomplished by the wisdom of knowing things as they are and the stages of the path based on conventional truth, and the vast path, which are the accumulation of merit and the aspect of skillful means. As it is also said in the Inconceivable Secret Sutra: The accumulation of wisdom will abandon all defilements. The accumulation of merit will cause all sentient beings to live closely. O Bhagavan, therefore, Bodhisattvas, great beings, should strive for the accumulation of merit and wisdom. And as it is also said in the Vimalakirti Sutra: What is the bondage of Bodhisattvas? What is liberation? The answer is: Wisdom not grasped by skillful means is bondage. Wisdom grasped by skillful means is liberation. Skillful means not grasped by wisdom is bondage. Skillful means grasped by wisdom is liberation. And as it is said in the Gaya Gori: The path of Bodhisattvas, in short, is these two. What are the two? They are skillful means and wisdom. And so on. The meaning of these is
