The excellent support for encouraging diligence should be known as the mind of enlightenment. Like a thirsty person hearing the sound of water, one should generate increasing enthusiasm for cultivating it (the mind of enlightenment). Having examined the paths with subtle observation through wonderful wisdom over many eons, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have seen that this is the excellent means to attain Buddhahood. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: 'Having deeply contemplated for many eons, the able ones saw this as beneficial.' Thus. Second, there are two parts: not abandoning the aspiration mind, and training to increase it. First, thus, taking the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and spiritual friends as witnesses, in their presence, make vows such as liberating beings who have not been liberated. Seeing that beings are numerous and their actions are evil, or that the time required for effort over many eons is long, or that the two accumulations are limitless and difficult to perform, one may become discouraged. If one abandons the burden of the mind of enlightenment, it is said that the sin is heavier than the root downfall of individual liberation vows, and abandoning the promised mind requires wandering in the lower realms for a long time, as stated in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara. Again, as that text says: As a blind man in a heap of garbage finds a precious jewel, so by what coincidence did this mind of enlightenment arise in me? Thinking thus, that I have obtained such a thing is truly wonderful. One should not abandon it at any time or place, focusing on it (the mind of enlightenment), and make many solemn promises not to abandon it even for a moment. Second, merely not abandoning it is not enough; one should increase it with great diligence three times during the day and three times during the night. If one can perform the complete ritual as described earlier, then do so. If not, then visualize the field of merit, make offerings, cultivate loving-kindness and compassion, and recite it six times. The ritual is: To the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, I go for refuge until enlightenment. By the merit of generosity and so forth, may I attain Buddhahood for the benefit of beings. (Recite) three times. Third, the measure of abandoning beings is: relying on some cause such as doing something inappropriate, the thought arises that 'Now I will never do this again.' Fourth,

Engaging in aspirational mind with vows, day by day, striving to accumulate merit such as offering to the Three Jewels as a cause for increasing the mind of enlightenment. The second is divided into two parts: abandoning the four black dharmas that cause (bodhicitta) to decline, and learning to adopt the four white dharmas that do not cause (bodhicitta) to decline. The first is: Regarding deceiving the Khenpo, Acharya, Lama, and the object of offering among the four black dharmas, the objects are: Khenpo and Acharya are easy to understand, Lama is the one who wants to benefit, and the object of offering, although not included in the previous two, possesses qualities. So, what actions become black dharmas? For any of the above objects, knowingly deceiving them is a black dharma. However, deception that is not false will be explained below, so it is necessary to deceive with falsehood. In the Compendium of Trainings, it is said that abandoning black dharmas is white dharma, because it is the antidote to the first of the four white dharmas. Furthermore, the object of creating regret for someone who has no regret is: other people doing good deeds without regret. So, what is done? With the intention of making them regret, causing regret in a place where there is no regret. Whether or not one can deceive successfully and whether or not regret arises are the same for both situations. The object of speaking words such as not praising beings who have entered the Great Vehicle is: those who have generated bodhicitta and currently possess it. So, what is done? Arousing from anger and speaking unpleasant words. The object hears what is said. Even if this happens, it is dangerous, and the faults are very great, as previously mentioned briefly. Furthermore, even if one generates contempt for a Bodhisattva, that Bodhisattva must remain in hell for that many eons. The Sutra of the Miraculous Manifestation of the Definitive Tranquility states that nothing other than slandering a Bodhisattva can cause a Bodhisattva to fall into lower realms. The Condensed Verses also state: If a Bodhisattva who has not received a prophecy becomes angry and argues with a Bodhisattva who has received a prophecy, then for as many eons as the anger arises, it will be that many eons before they can begin to walk the path. Therefore, anger must be completely avoided, and even if it arises, one must immediately confess and strive to maintain vows.
