It is unreasonable to distinguish between what is permissible and impermissible for many rituals. It is also said in the "Advice to King Clear": If one cannot learn the precepts of giving, etc., then just generating the mind of enlightenment will accomplish many merits, as a source. Because for those perfections, it is not possible for everyone to learn in every way, even so, one can obtain great results. Therefore, one should generate the mind of enlightenment by completely grasping it with skillful means. As stated in the "First Stage of Meditation," it is permissible to generate the mind of enlightenment for those who do not learn the precepts of giving, etc., and it is very clear that it is not permissible to take vows. The ritual for taking the mind of enlightenment is: May all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas residing in the ten directions consider me. May the teacher consider me. I, named so-and-so, in this life and in other lives, with the roots of virtue of the nature of giving, the nature of morality, and the nature of meditation that I have done, and that I have caused to be done, and that I have rejoiced in doing, just as the Buddhas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened ones of the past, and the great Bodhisattvas who dwell on the great earth, generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment, so too, I, named so-and-so, from this time until I reach the essence of enlightenment, will generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, great enlightenment. I will liberate those sentient beings who have not been liberated. I will free those who have not been freed. I will cause those who have not breathed to breathe. I will cause those who have not passed into complete nirvana to pass into complete nirvana. Say this three times. The ritual of taking refuge and these two rituals, although it is not explicitly stated that one must repeat after the teacher, it is necessary. These are the methods when there is a teacher. What should be done if a teacher cannot be found? In the ritual for generating the mind of enlightenment composed by Jowo (Atisha), it says: Thus, even without a teacher, the ritual for generating the mind of enlightenment oneself is: Remembering the Tathagata Shakyamuni Buddha and all the Tathagatas of the ten directions.
