When the mind's way of holding onto the object of focus becomes loose, because the object of focus is not held clearly or firmly, although there is clarity, if the way of holding onto the object of focus is not clear, one will fall into laxity. As it says in the Intermediate Stages of Meditation: 'When the mind does not clearly see the object of focus, like a blind person, or like a person entering darkness, or like closing the eyes, at that time, one should recognize that one has fallen into laxity.' Thus it is said. I have not seen a clear grasp of the characteristics of laxity from other major treatises. Laxity can be virtuous or neutral.
