In the verses, the Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes states, "Mindfulness is not forgetting the object." What is said means that (the guru) says that the key to keeping the mind stable is to recite with the mind. Therefore, practicing mindfulness is to prevent distraction from the object and forgetting the object. Not forgetting the object is to recite the object with the mind, that is, to repeatedly put the object in the heart. For example, if you are afraid of forgetting certain knowledge, you will repeatedly remember it, so it is not easy to forget. Third, then, to what extent does mindfulness tie the mind to the object, is there a definite time limit? In this regard, in the great treatises such as the Hearing Ground, there is no clear stipulation of the time limit, but in the Last Volume of the Stages of Meditation, it says: "With such a sequence, one can sit for an hour, or half a quarter, or an hour, or as long as one can." It is said that this is the time limit for practicing insight after the completion of calm abiding. However, it also applies to the initial practice of calm abiding. That is to say, as mentioned earlier, if you alternately practice mindfulness and awareness, alternately remembering the object and observing, then it does not matter if the time is a little longer. However, for most beginners, if the time is too long, either forgetfulness will arise, distraction will occur, and at this time, whether sinking or excitement arises, it will only be realized after a long time, and it cannot be detected quickly. Even if mindfulness is not forgotten, it is easy to be affected by sinking and excitement, and the occurrence of sinking and excitement cannot be detected quickly. Of these two situations, the former will hinder the powerful arising of mindfulness, and the latter will hinder the powerful arising of awareness, so it is difficult to eliminate sinking and excitement. In particular, forgetting the object and being distracted, failing to detect the occurrence of sinking and excitement, is worse than failing to quickly detect the occurrence of sinking and excitement in the state of not forgetting the object. Therefore, in order to prevent distraction from weakening mindfulness, the mindfulness practice method described above is very important. If it is easy to be distracted and forgetful, the forgetfulness is serious, and the awareness is weak to quickly detect sinking and excitement, then the time needs to be shortened. If it is not easy to produce forgetfulness, and sinking and excitement can be quickly detected, then it does not matter if the time is a little longer. Considering this, it is said that the time is one hour, etc.

It has been clearly stated that measurement is necessary. In short, one must adapt to one's own mental capacity, therefore it is said to do as much as one can. Furthermore, if there is no sudden harm to body and mind, maintain balance. If it occurs, do not force the practice, but eliminate the obstacles of the elements and then practice, as this is the intention of the wise. Therefore, doing so should also be understood as a component of the duration of the session. The third part has two divisions: how to act when agitation and dullness arise, and how to act when free from agitation and dullness. The first part has two divisions: relying on the antidote when agitation and dullness are not recognized, and relying on the antidote without striving to abandon them even when they are recognized. The first part has two divisions: establishing the definitions of agitation and dullness, and how to cultivate mindfulness to recognize them during practice. First, agitation is: As stated in the Compendium of Abhidharma, "What is agitation? It is the part of desire that follows attractive signs, the mind is not pacified, and it is the function that interrupts calm abiding." As it is said, there are three aspects to this: The object is a desirable and attractive object. The aspect is that the mind is not pacified and scatters outward, it is a part of desire, therefore it enters in the form of craving for objects. The function is to obstruct the mind from abiding on the object. When the mind is focused on an internal object, due to attachment to forms, sounds, etc., agitation involuntarily draws the mind to those objects and distracts it. As it is said in the Confession and Praise: How, how much one focuses on calm abiding, again and again placing the mind on it, from there, from there, the noose of afflictions, is involuntarily drawn by the rope of attachment to objects. Just as it is said. Dullness is: In many translations it is also translated as depression. Some people think that the mind does not scatter to other objects, but remains in a state of obscurity and unclearness, which is not reasonable. Because it is said in the Middle Stages of Meditation and the Commentary on the Middle Way that dullness arises from lethargy. Although the Compendium of Abhidharma also says that dullness is a near affliction of distraction, the distraction mentioned there can also produce good, so it is not necessarily an affliction. Therefore, lethargy is: As stated in the Compendium of Abhidharma and the Commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge, it is a part of ignorance, the body and mind are heavy and unsuitable for work. Dullness is: The mind
