Clarity that produces the thought of "father." Those two also arise from cutting off subtle sinking and generating and sustaining the power of clarity, so there is no need to mention them separately from the beginning. The joy and bliss that has the aspect of a peaceful feeling, although it arises here as the result of the samadhi to be accomplished, it is not concordant with the samadhi included in the first dhyana's access, so it is not counted here. When such power of clarity arises, it is interrupted by sinking, and when one-pointed non-conceptualization arises, it is interrupted by excitement, so the reason why sinking and excitement are the main obstacles to accomplishing pure samadhi is that. Therefore, if one does not know well how to recognize subtle and coarse sinking and excitement, and does not know the pure method of cultivating samadhi to prevent them, let alone vipassana, even shamatha cannot arise, so those who are wise and strive for samadhi should be skilled in those methods. Among them, sinking and excitement are obstacles to the accomplishment of shamatha, and the actual methods of identifying and preventing obstacles will be explained below, so here we will explain the method of cultivating samadhi, which is a favorable condition for the accomplishment of shamatha. Here, samadhi is the aspect of the mind abiding one-pointedly on the object, and it must be a continuous abiding on the object. For this, there is a need for a method that does not allow the mind to wander from the root object, and two things are needed: knowing whether or not it will wander, the former is mindfulness, and the latter is awareness. The Sutra Ornament Commentary says: Mindfulness and awareness are what cause nearness, because one causes the mind not to stray from the object, and the second knows well whether the mind is straying. Thus it is said. If mindfulness diminishes and the object is forgotten, one will wander and immediately lose the object, so mindfulness that does not forget the object is the root. The way that mindfulness brings the mind close to the object is: as explained earlier, after clearly establishing the object, at least one appearance arises, and then by knowing it, a strong grasping manner is generated, and the mind is elevated, and it abides without making any new speculations. Mindfulness is in the Compendium of Topics: What is mindfulness? It is on the object of habituation,

Regarding the object being inquired about, there is no forgetting in the mind, and it has the function of non-distraction. It is said to possess these three characteristics. Regarding the characteristic of the object: memory does not arise for unfamiliar objects, therefore it is for familiar objects. This means that in this context, it refers to the appearance of the object of focus that was previously determined. Regarding the characteristic of the manner of holding: there is no forgetting in the mind. This means that the mind does not forget that object, and in this context, it refers to not forgetting the object of focus. The manner of not forgetting is that when others inquire or one reflects on it, the object of focus is like this. It does not merely refer to being able to recall what the guru has taught, but rather that the mind is focused on the object, constantly remembering it without any distraction. If there is distraction, memory is lost as soon as it occurs. Therefore, once the mind has been placed on the object of focus, generate the thought that it is focused in this way, and then, without newly thinking, maintain the continuity of the mind's power without interruption. This is the key to cultivating mindfulness. Regarding the characteristic of the function: it prevents the mind from being distracted from the object to other places. Training the mind by focusing it on the object in this way is illustrated by the example of taming an elephant. For example, It is best to tie an unruly elephant with many strong ropes to a very sturdy tree or pillar, and train it like an elephant trainer. If not, it is like taming it by repeatedly stabbing and punishing it with a sharp iron hook. This mind, which is like an untamed elephant, should also be bound with the rope of mindfulness to the sturdy pillar of the object of focus mentioned earlier, and if it cannot be made to stay there, it should be pierced with the iron hook of awareness and gradually subdued. The Madhyamakahṛdayakārikā says: 'The elephant of the mind, which goes astray, should be bound firmly to the stable pillar of the object of focus with the rope of mindfulness, and gradually subdued with the hook of wisdom.' The Bhāvanākrama also says: 'The elephant of the mind should be tied to the tree of the object of focus with the rope of mindfulness and awareness.' It is said that samādhi is accomplished by relying on mindfulness, and that mindfulness, like a rope, constantly binds the mind to the object of focus. Therefore, the main way to cultivate the means of accomplishing samādhi is to cultivate mindfulness.
