Furthermore, regarding the two types of clarification: newly generated through thought and naturally present, the latter is more excellent for generating faith and is in accordance with the common vehicle, so it should be done in the latter way. First, when searching for the basis or object of focus on which the mind dwells, look for a beautiful image of the Buddha, such as a painted or sculpted image, and look at it repeatedly, grasping its characteristics, and accustom yourself to it appearing in your mind. Alternatively, contemplate the meaning of what the guru has conveyed, allow it to appear in your mind, and then search for an object of focus. The object of focus should not be in the form of a painted or sculpted image, but rather you should train yourself to have it appear as the actual form of the Buddha. Some people place a statue in front of them and stare at it with their eyes while meditating, but this is forbidden by the scholar Yeshe De, which is very reasonable. This is because samadhi is not cultivated through sense consciousness but through mind consciousness, so the actual object of samadhi is the actual object of mind consciousness, and therefore it must be grasped. As mentioned earlier, it is said that one must focus on the general meaning or image of the actual object. Regarding the subtle and coarse parts of the body, it is also said elsewhere that one should first focus on the coarse part, and when it is stable, then focus on the subtle part. Moreover, from experience, the coarse part is very easy to appear, so one must take the coarse outline of the body as the object of focus. In particular, if one is practicing before achieving a vipashyana that possesses the characteristics of shamatha, it is not permissible to switch to many different types of objects of focus. This is because if one cultivates samadhi by switching to many different objects of focus, it will become a great obstacle to achieving shamatha. Arya Vira said: "When the mind is stable on one object, make the thought of the mind stable. If it passes through many objects, the mind will be disturbed by afflictions." Furthermore, the Lamp for the Path says: "On any one object, one should place the mind on virtue." It is stated with the definitive word "one." Thus, the standard for initially finding an object of focus on which the mind dwells is: the head, the two hands, the rest of the body, and the two feet, visualizing them clearly several times in order. Finally, when the overall body is brought to mind, if the coarse limbs can appear in the mind to about half their extent, then it is a clear

Even if (luminosity) arises, do not be satisfied with just that and cling to it. Like this, do not be content with merely that and hold onto the mind, but desire something even clearer. If you repeatedly try to make it clear, although the object will become clear, not only will you not gain stable samadhi, but it will also become an obstacle to gaining samadhi. Even if the object is not very clear, as long as about half of it is If you focus your mind on that, you will quickly gain samadhi, and then by striving to make it clear, clarity will be easily achieved. This comes from the instructions of the scholar Yeshe De, and it is very important. That is to say, according to the degree of arising, grasp the general form of the body, and if some parts of the body appear clearly, focus on that. If it becomes unclear, still focus on the general form. At that time, if you want to meditate on yellow but red appears, or if you want to meditate on a sitting posture but a standing posture appears, or if you want to meditate on one but two appear, or if you want to meditate on large but small appears, if uncertain sizes appear, you must not follow these, but take the fundamental object as the support for your focus. If it is the time to practice the yoga of the secret mantra deity, you must clearly practice the form of the deity, and until it appears, you must use various methods to generate it. Here, if it is difficult to manifest the form of the deity, then it is also permissible to abide in any one of the previously shown objects, or to abide in the view of merely ascertaining its own nature, and to practice samadhi by focusing the mind, because the main purpose is to accomplish calm abiding. The second part has three points: establishing faultless rules, eliminating faulty rules, and indicating the duration of a session. The first point is: the samadhi to be practiced here has two special characteristics. Like this, it has the power of clarity, where the mind is very clear, and it has the aspect of abiding, where one focuses single-pointedly on the object without conceptual thought. Some add bliss to this, making it three, while others add lucidity, making it four, but there are two kinds of lucidity: the lucidity of the object-possessor, which is like filling a stainless glass vessel with stainless water, and when it is struck by the sunlight without clouds, one feels it is even more lucid than that; and when the image of an object such as a pillar appears, one is able to count up to the finest dust particles of those
