It is. Because mindfulness is also a way of holding that has a definite aspect, when cultivating samadhi, if there is no firm holding of certainty, but only settling in the clarity of mind, although there will be a manifestation of the clarity of mind, there will be no manifestation of the power of certainty, so strong mindfulness will not arise. Even subtle sinking cannot be prevented, so samadhi will become flawed. Without placing other objects of focus such as Buddha images, but only cultivating the non-conceptual mind, one should also remember to settle the mind without conceptualizing any object. After that, one should not let the mind wander. Not wandering is also the same as mindfulness of not forgetting the object of focus, and it does not go beyond the way of cultivating mindfulness, so cultivating in this way can also rely on the mindfulness that arises from the power of certainty. Secondly, there is such a wrong concept to be eliminated: As mentioned before, if the awareness is raised and restrained, and settled in non-conceptuality, although there is no sinking, the component of agitation is heavier, and it will be found that it is impossible to continue to abide. The power of awareness will also decline. If the restraint is completely relaxed, it will be found that abiding arises quickly, and it is thought that this is a good method. Many people say that relaxation is the best meditation. This is because they do not distinguish between the arising of sinking and the arising of meditation. A flawless samadhi must, as mentioned before, have two characteristics. The mere abiding of the non-conceptual mind is not enough. If such a mind has a turbid dullness, although it is sinking, but because there is no such situation, there is a manifestation of the clarity of mind, it is thought that samadhi has no flaws. This is because they do not distinguish between dullness and sinking, and these will be explained below. Therefore, if the over-restrained awareness becomes strong and powerful, although there is clarity, it is difficult to generate abiding because the component of agitation is heavier. If it is cultivated by relaxing it too much, although there is abiding, there is no clarity of the manifestation of power because the component of sinking is heavier. Because it is difficult to grasp the boundary of moderate tightness and looseness, it is thought that it is difficult to generate a samadhi that is free from sinking and agitation. Chandrakirti said, "If you are diligent, agitation will arise, and if you abandon it, lethargy will arise. It is difficult to obtain equal entry in this principle, my mind is disturbed, what should I do?" and "If you try to enter diligently, agitation will arise, and if you relax it, lethargy will arise.

it will become like that. It is also difficult to achieve this middle way. What is the use of disturbing my mind? If you try to restrain and diligently practice, you will generate excitement. Seeing this situation, if you relax the mind of effort and abandon diligence, then a shrinking sinking will arise in the mind, therefore, you must stay away from the two extremes of sinking and excitement, and be in the middle way, that is, it is difficult to obtain the mind that abides in equality, the samadhi of equal entry. As it is said, if you relax too much, there will be no difficulty, and sinking will arise from it, so it is unreasonable to practice samadhi in this way. The boundary between restraint and relaxation is: when you observe yourself, you feel that if the wisdom is raised to this level, excitement will definitely arise, and you should relax below that level. Above the level where you feel that it is easy to generate sinking if you stay at this level, you should take a higher way of staying. The holy Asanga also said: For abiding and correct abiding, there must be a mind that restrains and enters. This is said in the stage of the first two minds. In the first part of the Stages of Meditation, it is also said: To eliminate sinking, firmly grasp the object of focus. This is how it is explained. If you do not understand the way to use mindfulness and force it, then the more you meditate, the more serious the forgetting will be, and the wisdom to distinguish the meaning of the Dharma will become dull, and so on, many faults will arise. So, when mindfulness connects the mind to the object, can it generate the thought of observing whether the object is well grasped? Answer: This must be done, as stated in the middle volume of the Stages of Meditation. But this is not observing in this way after abandoning samadhi, but observing whether the root object of focus abides as before while staying in the state of samadhi, and if it does not abide, then observe whether it has fallen into sinking or excitement. That is, after staying in samadhi, do not be too short or too long, but observe intermittently. Doing this when the power of the previous thought has not disappeared will give power to that thought, and it will be able to abide in a powerful state for a long time, and it is necessary to quickly perceive sinking and excitement. Similarly, intermittently remembering the previous object of focus is also to make mindfulness stronger and to be a cause for continuous entry, so the way to practice mindfulness is from the place of hearing.
