Method. The extent to which calm abiding is accomplished through practice. The first aspect has six points: Dwelling in a suitable place, which refers to a place with five qualities, namely, food, clothing, etc., are obtained without difficulty, easy to obtain; there are no ferocious beasts or unruly people, and no enemies, etc., good dwelling; it is a land that does not cause disease, good land; it has friends with the same discipline and view, good friends; there are not many people during the day and the sound is small at night, very complete. It is also said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Where the wise practice, easy to obtain, good dwelling, good land, good friends, possessing the equipment for yogic bliss." That's what it says. Small desire refers to not being particularly attached to good or many Dharma clothes, etc. Contentment refers to always being content with obtaining only slightly inferior Dharma clothes, etc. Completely abandoning many activities refers to abandoning bad activities such as buying and selling, and being too close to householders and renunciates, as well as practicing medicine and astrology, etc. Pure morality refers to not violating the precepts of both the Pratimoksha and Bodhisattva vows, for both natural and prohibited transgressions, and even if violated due to negligence, being able to quickly repent and restore them according to the Dharma. Completely abandoning thoughts of desire, etc. refers to contemplating the faults of this life, such as killing and bondage, or the faults of future lives, such as falling into evil destinies, or contemplating that all things in samsara, whether liked or disliked, are the law of destruction, are impermanent, and will inevitably be separated from them and me for a long time, then what special attachment, etc., do I have to them? Practice in this way, thereby abandoning all thoughts of desire. It is also said in the Lamp on the Path: "If the limbs of calm abiding are deficient, even if one practices diligently, even after millions of years, samadhi will not be accomplished." Therefore, for those who want to practice calm abiding samadhi from the depths of their hearts, it is very important to strive for the thirteen conditions of calm abiding, etc., spoken of from the place of hearing. The second aspect is divided into two: preliminary practice, main practice. The first is: the six preliminary practices mentioned earlier and the mind of bodhicitta.
