Therefore, even without understanding emptiness, there is absolutely no obstacle to the arising of non-conceptual samadhi. Through this means, if the mind can remain focused for a long time, by the power of that focus, prana can arise. Once prana arises, it is natural for joy and bliss to arise in body and mind, so there is no contradiction in the arising of bliss. Once bliss arises, by the power of the clear manifestation of the feeling of joy and bliss, clarity will arise in the mind. Therefore, it is not possible to assert that all samadhis of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality realize suchness. Thus, samadhi that realizes emptiness will also have bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality, and for samadhi where the mind is not directed towards emptiness, bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality often arise, so it is necessary to distinguish the difference between these two. Fourth, why is it not sufficient to cultivate only shamatha or vipassana individually, but necessary to cultivate both? For example, when lighting a lamp at night to view a mural, if the lamp is very bright and not moved by the wind, the painted images will be seen very clearly. If the lamp is not bright, or if it is bright but moved by the wind, the images will not be seen clearly. Similarly, when viewing the profound meaning, if one possesses the wisdom that ascertains the meaning of suchness without any distortion, and the immovability of the mind that abides as desired on the object of focus, then suchness will be seen clearly. Even if there is non-conceptual samadhi where the mind abides without scattering elsewhere, if there is no wisdom that realizes the nature of reality, no matter how much one cultivates samadhi, it is impossible to realize the nature of reality. Even if one has a view that understands selflessness, if there is no stable samadhi where the mind abides in one-pointedness, it is impossible to clearly see the meaning of the nature of reality. Therefore, both shamatha and vipassana are necessary. The Middle Stages of Meditation states: "Vipassana alone, without shamatha, will cause the yogi's mind to wander to external objects, and like a lamp in the wind, it will not be stable. Therefore, the light of wisdom will not arise very clearly, so both should be cultivated equally." It also says: "The power of shamatha is like placing a lamp in a windless place, the mind will not be moved by the winds of conceptual thoughts. Vipassana, by abandoning all nets of wrong views,

Others do not understand, as it is said in the Moon Lamp Sutra: With the power of calm abiding, it becomes unshakeable; with insight, it becomes like a mountain. Just like that. Thus, if one contemplates with the wisdom that possesses the samadhi of calm abiding, which is not disturbed by dullness and agitation, one will come to know the true meaning. Considering this, the Dharma Collection Sutra says: If the mind is placed in equanimity, one will know the truth as it is. So it is said. As it is said in the First Stage of Meditation: The mind is like water, constantly moving, therefore without the foundation of calm abiding, it cannot abide. A mind that is not placed in equanimity cannot know the truth as it is. The Blessed One also fully knew the truth as it is through being placed in equanimity. Thus, it was taught. So it is said. If calm abiding is accomplished, not only can one avoid the fault of agitation caused by the wisdom that properly investigates selflessness, but also for all the various kinds of discriminating wisdom that cultivate impermanence, the results of actions, the faults of samsara, loving-kindness, compassion, the mind of enlightenment, etc., one can avoid the fault of distraction from the object of focus, and thus focus on one's own object of focus without being distracted elsewhere. Therefore, all the virtuous deeds one does have great power. Before calm abiding is attained, most of the time one is distracted by other objects of focus, therefore all the virtuous practices one does have little power. As it is said in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds: A person whose mind is distracted dwells in the fangs of afflictions. And, recitations and asceticism, etc., even if practiced for a long time, if done with a distracted mind, the wise say that they are meaningless. Just like that. Fifth, as it is said in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds: Knowing that insight endowed with perfect calm abiding destroys afflictions, one should first seek calm abiding. As it is said, one should first cultivate calm abiding, and then rely on it to cultivate insight. To this, someone might think: As it is said in the First Stage of Meditation: Its object of focus is not definite. Thus it is said that the object of focus of calm abiding is not definite. As previously explained, the object of focus of calm abiding has two aspects: phenomena and suchness. First, one should understand the meaning of selflessness, and then meditate on it, so that the mind will not be distracted elsewhere, which is calm abiding.
