Similarly, the benefits of meditation and wisdom that are mentioned should also be understood as the benefits of these two. Secondly, all the immeasurable samadhis of the Great and Small Vehicles are contained within tranquility and insight, as stated in the Explanation of the Profound Meaning Sutra. Therefore, those who seek samadhi should thoroughly investigate the methods of cultivating tranquility and insight, which are the general principles of all samadhis, since they cannot exhaust the infinite distinctions of clarity. Thirdly, regarding the nature of tranquility: The Explanation of the Profound Meaning Sutra states, "He dwells alone in a secluded place, and inwardly, he correctly applies his mind, and with whatever mind he applies his mind, he continuously applies his mind inwardly to the Dharma that he has contemplated. Having entered in this way and remained there many times, whatever arises as physical pliancy and mental pliancy is called tranquility." Its meaning is that when the mind does not wander elsewhere and continuously applies itself, the mind naturally abides in its object, and when the joy and bliss of physical and mental pliancy arise, that samadhi becomes tranquility. This arises merely from the mind not wandering from its object and being held within, and does not depend on understanding the reality of things. Regarding the nature of insight: The Sutra itself states, "Having obtained physical pliancy and mental pliancy, and abiding in that, having abandoned the aspects of the mind, inwardly, he separately contemplates and aspires to the Dharma that he has contemplated as an image of the object of samadhi. Thus, whatever is the discrimination, detailed discrimination, complete recollection, complete examination, forbearance, desire, distinction, observation, and separate recollection of the meaning of what is to be known in those images of the object of samadhi is called insight. Thus, a Bodhisattva is skilled in insight." Among these, discrimination is discriminating how many, detailed discrimination is discriminating how, recollection is roughly recollecting, and examination is carefully examining. The Jewel Cloud Sutra states, "Tranquility is one-pointedness of mind, and insight is separate recollection." And, the Venerable

Maitreya also said, "The name of Dharma in summary is this: Know that quiescence is the path. The path of insight is to know those meanings, Know that it is to properly distinguish. Relying on true abiding, In order to settle the mind on the mind, In order to properly distinguish the Dharma, It is quiescence and insight." Thus, it is said that settling the mind relying on true samadhi is quiescence, and the wisdom that properly distinguishes the Dharma is insight. The Bodhisattva-bhumi also says the same, and the Madhyamaka-vibhaga also says, "When distraction to external objects ceases, and one rejoices in constantly and naturally entering into the internal object, and abiding in a very tamed mind-nature is called quiescence. When abiding in that quiescence, whatever properly distinguishes that alone is insight." Thus, the Prajnaparamita Upadesha also says the same. As stated in the Sutra Division and the Prajnaparamita Upadesha, since each of quiescence and insight has both the suchness and the extent of all things as its object, quiescence and insight are not distinguished separately from the aspect of the object. There is also quiescence that realizes emptiness, and there is also insight that does not realize emptiness. Moreover, it is called quiescence because the mind ceases running towards external objects and abides in the internal object, and it is called insight because of seeing the superior, that is, the special. Some people think that abiding without conceptualizing the mind, without the radiance of clarity, is quiescence, and having radiance is insight, which is unreasonable, because it contradicts everything said before, and especially that difference is only the difference between the presence or absence of dullness in samadhi, because all samadhi of quiescence necessarily requires dullness and clarity, and in all samadhi free from dullness, the clarity of mind will necessarily arise. Therefore, whether the samadhi and wisdom that focus on emptiness are or are not, needs to be determined from the aspect of whether the mind has realized any of the two aspects of the object, phenomena and selflessness, because there are countless samadhis of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptualization that do not turn the mind towards that suchness. Thus, even if one has not found the view of realizing the way things are, it is manifestly established that it is sufficient to hold the mind without conceptualizing anything.
