Although it is permissible to cultivate both calm abiding and insight that focuses on emptiness simultaneously, why is it that one first seeks calm abiding and then meditates on insight? Regarding this, the way calm abiding precedes insight is as follows: To generate an understanding of the view that realizes selflessness, it is not necessary for calm abiding to precede it, because it is seen that a view can arise even without calm abiding. To generate an experience that transforms the mind based on that view, it is also not necessary for calm abiding to precede it, because even without calm abiding, it is not contradictory to generate a transformation of mind by repeatedly examining and familiarizing oneself with discriminating wisdom. If it were contradictory, then generating an experience that transforms the mind when cultivating impermanence, the faults of samsara, and the mind of enlightenment would also depend on calm abiding, which would be too extreme, because the reason is the same. So, what is the way in which calm abiding precedes insight? Here, generating insight refers to newly generating a realization born of meditation that has not arisen before, which is the case for ordinary beings. Among these, except for the special method of meditating on selflessness with a special object that realizes emptiness, which will be explained below, in the case of the Paramita Vehicle and the three lower Tantra classes, if one does not cultivate analytical meditation by examining the meaning of selflessness with discriminating wisdom, the realization born of meditating on insight will not arise, so analytical meditation is necessary. For this, if one seeks an understanding of selflessness before calm abiding is accomplished and repeatedly contemplates its meaning, then because calm abiding has not been accomplished beforehand, it is impossible to accomplish calm abiding by relying on it. If one does not contemplate but engages in placement meditation, then even if calm abiding is accomplished by relying on it, there is no way to cultivate insight other than the way of cultivating calm abiding, so one must seek insight later. Therefore, it does not go beyond the sequence of first seeking calm abiding and then meditating on insight by relying on it. Therefore, if in this system the way to generate insight is not to generate pliancy through analytical meditation with discriminating wisdom, then there is no valid reason to meditate on insight by relying on having sought calm abiding beforehand, and it is also very unreasonable not to meditate in that sequence, because the Samdhinirmocana Sutra states that one should meditate on insight by relying on having attained calm abiding.

As previously stated, the latter arises based on the former. Such is the order of Samadhi and Prajna of the Six Perfections, and the order of arising of the Adhisila-prajna based on the Adhisila-samadhi, all of which are the order of first cultivating Samatha and then Vipassana. Moreover, the Yogacarabhumi-sastra and the Sravakabhumi-sastra also state that Vipassana is cultivated based on Samatha. The Madhyamaka-hrdaya and the Bodhisattvacaryavatara, the three stages of the Bhavanakrama, Yeshe Drakpa, and Santipa all say that one should first seek Samatha and then cultivate Vipassana. Therefore, some Indian teachers believe that one does not need to seek Samatha separately, but rather from the beginning, one should investigate with the wisdom of individual examination, thereby generating Vipassana. This view contradicts the treatises of the great chariots, and therefore should not be trusted by those with intelligence. The order of Samatha and Vipassana is also such that it is done that way when it is first newly generated, but later one can also cultivate Vipassana first and then cultivate Samatha, so the order is not fixed. If the Abhidharmasamuccaya says: Some have attained Vipassana, but have not attained Samatha, they rely on Vipassana to strive for Samatha. What does this mean? This refers to not having attained the Samatha included in the Upacara of the first Dhyana, but not to not having attained the Samatha above the actual basis of the first Dhyana. That is, after directly realizing the Four Noble Truths, one cultivates the Samatha above the first Dhyana based on this. As the Vastuprakarana of the Yogacarabhumi-sastra says: Furthermore, from suffering to the path, one knows correctly as it is, but one has not attained the first Dhyana, etc., therefore, when one sits down, one settles the mind and does not discriminate. Based on that Adhiprajna, one connects with the Adhicitta. Therefore, in general, for the sake of easy terminology, the nine states of mind are called Samatha, and the four, such as discrimination, are called Vipassana, but the actual Samatha and Vipassana must be established after the arising of Prasrabdhi. Sixth, in three parts: the way to train in Samatha, the way to train in Vipassana, and the way to combine the two. First, in three parts: relying on the conducive conditions for Samatha, and based on this, cultivating Samatha.
