Therefore, purify discipline with wisdom, understand the faults and merits of intolerance and patience with wisdom, and with a subdued mind, not be robbed by evil deeds and suffering. With wisdom, know well the basis for initiating diligence, and therefore, diligently practice, which can make the progress of the path vast. The supreme bliss of meditation that abides in the meaning of suchness is accomplished by wisdom that relies on reason. Therefore, the first five perfections, such as generosity, are completely purified, depending on wisdom. Accomplishing that two seemingly contradictory qualities are not contradictory with wisdom means that when a Bodhisattva becomes a Chakravartin king ruling the four continents, he is not controlled by sensual pleasures, which is the power of having a wise minister. Similarly, even if strong love arises for sentient beings, it will not be mixed with any attachment; even if strong and lasting unbearable compassion arises for the suffering of sentient beings, it will not be overwhelmed by sorrow, and there will be no laziness that does not rejoice in virtue; even if one has immeasurable joy, there will be no frivolity of the mind being distracted from the object; even if one constantly has great equanimity, one will not be negligent for even a moment in the matter of benefiting beings, all of which is accomplished by wisdom. Because wisdom prevents the obstacles to accomplishing these powers equally. In the 'Praise of the Praiseworthy,' it says, 'Do not abandon the Dharma-nature, and also follow the conventional.' As it is said, for the object of clinging to names, the Dharma-nature of obtaining great certainty without even a particle being established, need not be abandoned; for the reason that individual fruits arise from internal and external causes, the conventional, which is determined from the depths of the heart, is also not contradictory and follows. For those without wisdom, it is extremely contradictory, but for those with wisdom, it is not contradictory and follows. Again, it says in the same text: 'In permission and prohibition, in some of your teachings, there is certainty as one, in others there is no certainty, but there is also no mutual contradiction.' As it is said, there are many differences in permission and prohibition between the higher and lower vehicles, and between Sutra and Tantra, and these are practiced by one person. Seeking the intention of all the scriptures, for those without wisdom, it is contradictory, but for the wise, it is not contradictory, which is also due to wisdom.

It is like this. The fault is: if wisdom is lacking, the five perfections such as generosity and the view will not be pure. As it is said in the "Compendium of Perfections": Without wisdom, one seeks the fruit, The nature of generosity is not pure, Giving for the sake of others is the best of generosity, The rest is the combination of increasing wealth. And it says: If the light of wisdom does not dispel the darkness, He will not be pure and possess morality. Most of the precepts are without wisdom, The faults of knowledge become contaminated with defilements. And it says: If the mind is stained by the fault of wrong wisdom, The virtue of patience does not like to dwell in it. Holding an unpleasant attitude towards discerning good and bad, Like a king without virtue, he has a false reputation. And it says: The wise are highly praised, There is nothing more subtle and profound than this, Not obscured by the fault of desire, Without wisdom, one cannot walk on the straight path of the mind. And it says: If one holds the mind without diligence in the way of wisdom, His view will not be completely pure. So it is said. Among them, the reputation of the king refers to the king without virtue, and the reputation will fade away even if it appears once. Therefore, wisdom must be generated, and its cause is to listen to the completely pure scriptures according to one's intellectual ability. As it is said in the "Compendium of Perfections": Those who hear little are like the blind, do not know the way of meditation, Without that, what should one think? Therefore, one should strive to listen, that is the cause, As one thinks, meditation gives rise to vast wisdom. The venerable Maitreya also said: Whatever is the conceptualization of the three circles, That is said to be the obscuration of the knowable, Whatever is the conceptualization of stinginess, etc., That is said to be the obscuration of afflictions, Other than wisdom, these, There is no other cause for abandonment, Therefore wisdom is supreme, Thus hearing, Therefore hearing is supreme. It is also said in the "Compendium of Training": One should seek hearing that can endure, Then one should dwell in the forest, One should strive for equanimity. The former saints also said: The Dharma that has been heard before should be firmly kept in mind, and it should be repeatedly thought, measured, and observed. If you put the Dharma out of your mind and only learn a single mind-holding, that is not helpful. A great meditator needs a good teacher, a medium meditator
