Seeing it as a place where cowardice has not arisen, one prevents it. There are also three types of cowardice: thinking that one cannot attain the boundless qualities of the Buddha to be attained; thinking that one cannot accomplish the immeasurable difficulties of giving limbs and so on; and feeling cowardly thinking that one must endlessly take birth in samsara, and at that time one will be harmed by the suffering of samsara. The antidote to the first is that those who became Buddhas in the past did not attain high positions from the beginning, but rather people like me gradually rose and achieved Buddhahood, and the Bhagavan also said that even those who are worse than me can attain Buddhahood, so I think, if I do not give up diligence, why can't I achieve it? The antidote to the second is that giving the body and so on is not done when the idea of difficult practice arises, but when giving, one thinks that it is not difficult, just like giving food and so on. The antidote to the third is that since Bodhisattvas abandon sins, the suffering of feeling its results will not arise, and because of the stable understanding that samsara is without self-nature like illusion, there is no suffering in the mind, and if body and mind are happy and flourishing, even if one stays in samsara, there is no reason to be weary, thinking in this way one prevents cowardice. There are four conditions that support diligence. The power of aspiration is to cultivate the results of actions and generate desire for taking and abandoning. The power of steadfastness is not to act carelessly without examination, but once one has examined and started, to persevere to the end. The power of joy is to engage in diligence without interruption and without weariness, like a child playing. The power of abandonment is to rest and recover when the body and mind are tired after engaging in diligence, and then immediately start again. Thus, relying on preventing obstacles and relying on favorable conditions, the body and mind become light and swift, and diligence is continuously engaged in, like the wind blowing cottonwood flowers. When training in diligence, one should have the six perfections, that is, one should abide in diligence oneself and place others in it, which is the giving of diligence, and the rest are the same as before. Fifth, there are three: the nature of meditation, its divisions, and how it arises in the continuum. The first is that the mind is virtuous.

It is to abide single-pointedly on any one of the objects of focus, without mental wandering. Secondly, in terms of essence, there are two types: mundane and supramundane. In terms of aspects, there are three: calm abiding, insight, and the union of the two. In terms of function, there are meditations that bring happiness to body and mind in this life, meditations that manifest qualities, and meditations that benefit sentient beings. The first is the meditation that, when one abides in it, generates extreme pliancy of body and mind. The second is the meditation that accomplishes qualities common to Hearers, such as clairvoyance, liberation, cessation, and overpowering. The third is the meditation that accomplishes the eleven purposes of meditation. Thirdly, it is thinking about the benefits of meditating and the faults of not meditating, etc., which will be explained in the section on calm abiding. The giving of learning to possess the six perfections in meditation is that one abides in one's own meditation and also places others in it. The rest are the same as before. The sixth (wisdom) has three parts: the nature of wisdom, its divisions, and how it arises in the mindstream. First, in general, wisdom is what thoroughly distinguishes phenomena in the object of investigation. Here, it refers to the wisdom of being skilled in the five sciences, etc. Second, there are three types of wisdom: understanding ultimate truth, understanding conventional truth, and understanding the activities that benefit sentient beings. The first is measuring the suchness of selflessness from the general aspect, and measuring from the aspect of manifestation. The second is the wisdom of being skilled in the five sciences. The third is knowing how to accomplish the benefits of sentient beings in this life and the next without fault. Third, it is thinking about the benefits and faults of generating or not generating wisdom. First, as it says in the Hundred Verses on Wisdom: This virtue, seen and unseen, the root of all is wisdom. Thus, to accomplish both, wisdom should be fully embraced. So it is said. Even if a Bodhisattva gives flesh to a beggar, he will not be moved by thoughts of pride and dejection, etc., just as if taking medicine from a medicinal tree. This is because he has realized suchness through wisdom. With the wisdom that sees the decline of samsara and nirvana, one accomplishes ethical discipline for the sake of others.
