Moreover, if one experiences intense feelings of suffering, it is because it originates from negativity. If one does not want that result, one must reverse it from the cause. Therefore, one should have the merit of abstaining from evil; being tormented by suffering is because one desires happiness. If one needs happiness, one must do good, so one should have the merit of delighting in doing good; putting oneself in others' shoes and thinking that others also have suffering, thereby generating compassion for sentient beings in samsara, one should know these things and repeatedly train the mind that this suffering is the desired situation. Moreover, as it is said, "There is nothing that does not become easy through habit. Therefore, by habituating oneself to small harms, one can also endure great harms." Like this, holding the armor of the thought of accepting suffering, starting with small sufferings and gradually mixing them, one can make the power of accepting suffering stronger and stronger. The method of cultivating patience with firm conviction and joy in the Dharma is: First, the object of refuge is the Three Jewels; the object to be manifested is the two selflessnesses; the object of hope is the great power of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas; the object of acceptance and rejection is the cause of good and bad deeds and their results; the object of cultivation is the Bodhi to be attained; the method of attaining Bodhi is the path of the Bodhisattva's training; the object of hearing and thinking is the sacred Dharma such as the twelve divisions of scripture, and one should cultivate joy in these without partiality. The fourth (diligence) has three: the nature of diligence, the divisions, and the way to generate it in the mindstream. The first is: In order to accumulate merit and benefit sentient beings, the mind is delighted, and the actions of body, speech, and mind that arise from this are explained in the *Yogacarabhumi*. The second (divisions) has three: Armor-like diligence is: When a Bodhisattva begins to practice diligence, before engaging in the practice, joy arises in the mind beforehand. This armor of thought is that in order to eliminate the suffering of one sentient being, even if one has to remain in hell for countless great kalpas, in hundreds of millions of billions of hells, and only then attain Buddhahood, one would still be joyful, striving for perfect Bodhi, and not giving up the diligence that has already begun, then the time is shorter than that, and the suffering is smaller, let alone, like this, one puts on the armor of thought. The diligence of accumulating virtuous Dharmas is: In order to accomplish the six perfections, those

It is a combination. The diligence of benefiting sentient beings is the same as before. Third, the way to generate it in the continuum. The benefits of diligence, the Ornament of the Sutras says: Among the collections of virtues, diligence is supreme. Thus, relying on it, one obtains it later. Diligence can quickly obtain happiness. Accomplishments belong to both the world and beyond. Diligence can obtain the desires of existence. Diligence can possess great purity. Diligence can be liberated from the destruction of aggregates. Diligence can attain supreme enlightenment. Also, the Compendium of Perfections says: If one possesses great diligence without any weariness, then there is nothing that cannot be obtained or accomplished. It also says: All non-humans are happy to benefit him. All samadhis will be attained. Days and nights will pass with fruit. The collection of qualities will not be diminished. By the meanings that surpass human dharma, it will increase like an উৎপala flower. Thus. The faults of not being diligent, the Question of Sagaramati says: For the lazy, enlightenment is very far away, and extremely far away. For the lazy, there is no generosity, and so on, up to wisdom. For the lazy, there is no benefit to others. Also, the Mindfulness Sutra says: The root of all afflictions is only laziness, which exists in whoever has it. Whoever has one laziness, all dharmas are absent from him. Thus, think about it. There are two real obstacles to generating diligence: seeing that one can accomplish virtuous dharmas but not engaging in them, and being discouraged, thinking, "How could I accomplish such a thing?" The first also has two: thinking that there is still time and procrastinating, and otherwise being overwhelmed by attachment to evil deeds. The antidote to the first is to meditate on the three: that obtaining this body quickly decays, that one falls into the lower realms after death, and that it is difficult to obtain this good support again, as has already been shown. The antidote to attachment is that the true dharma is the cause of infinite joy arising in this life and the next, and that meaningless chatter and distractions such as excitement cause great meaning to be lost here, and suffering in future lives.
