It should be done. Now, because faith and understanding are not yet mature and strength is weak, although one has already given the body to sentient beings in thought, one does not actually give flesh and blood, etc. However, if one does not train the thought of giving up one's life, one will not become accustomed to it, and in the end, one will not be able to give up one's life. As stated in the Compendium of Trainings, one should train one's thoughts from now on. Having thus given food, clothing, etc., to sentient beings from the depths of one's heart, if one forgets the thought of "using these for the benefit of others" when using them, and instead uses them greedily for one's own benefit, that is affliction. If there is no greed, but one forgets the awareness of being connected to all sentient beings, or if one is attached to a particular sentient being, that is a downfall that is not an affliction. Regarding those things that have already been given away, if one thinks of them as belonging to others and uses them for oneself, that becomes taking what has not been given, and if the value is sufficient, it will become a root downfall of individual liberation. If one uses the possessions of sentient beings themselves, thinking, "I will do this for their benefit," then there is no fault, as stated in the Compendium of Trainings. The way a root downfall occurs is: if one sincerely vows to give something to a human being, and that person knows and accepts it, in that situation, if one thinks of it as belonging to another and takes it for one's own benefit, if the value is sufficient, there is the possibility of a root downfall occurring, so please be aware. Furthermore, from the depths of one's heart, joyfully conjuring up immeasurable varieties of objects to be given through imagination, and cultivating the faith that one has given them to sentient beings, in this way, with little effort, one can increase immeasurable merit, and this is also the giving of a Bodhisattva with wisdom, as stated in the Bodhisattva Grounds. When studying the perfection of giving, if one can study with the six perfections, the power will be great. That is, at that time, having the intention of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer, upholding the precepts, having faith in the Dharma of omniscience, enduring the abuse of others, generating diligence that desires to increase it more and more, the one-pointed concentration that is not mixed with the Lesser Vehicle, and the contemplation of dedicating the root of virtue to perfect enlightenment, and the wisdom that knows that the object of giving, the giver, and the receiver are all like illusions, that is, perfecting the six perfections. The second part has three points: the nature of ethics, the divisions, and the way to generate it in the mindstream. The first point is: the mind of abandoning, turning away from harming others at the root, is ethics, that is, the ethics of vows.

It is based on the principle of taking ethics as the main thing. The habit of that mind becomes more and more complete, and it becomes the perfection of ethics. It is not established by externally cutting off all harm to sentient beings. In the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra, it says: From obtaining the mind of renunciation, it is said that ethics goes to the other shore. That's what it says. The second has three: The ethics of vows is: Taking the complete intention as the standard, it is the ten kinds of abandonment that abandon the ten non-virtues. Taking its own nature as the standard, it is the seven abandonments of body and speech that abandon the seven non-virtues. On this, the Bodhisattva Bhumi says: The intention of the ethics of vows in the Bodhisattva's continuum, which is said to be the seven kinds of individual liberation, is: A Bodhisattva who has the vows of individual liberation, if he has the vows of a Bodhisattva, then whether he is a householder or the actual vows of individual liberation in the direction of renunciation, and the abandonment that is common to these in his continuum, is the ethics of vows. If he is a Bodhisattva who has vows that cannot be relied upon for individual liberation, then the natural transgressions that are common to individual liberation, and the various kinds of transgressions that are permitted, are the ethics of vows. The vows of individual liberation in the Bodhisattva's continuum, although they are the vows of ethics in the Bodhisattva's continuum, are not the actual vows of the Bodhisattva. The rest have a common basis with the Bodhisattva's vows. The ethics of collecting good dharmas is: Focusing on the good dharmas such as the six perfections, generating what has not arisen in one's own continuum, not allowing what has arisen to degenerate, and increasing it more and more. The ethics of benefiting sentient beings is: Through ethics, accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings in this life and the next without transgression. The third is: Pure ethics depends on taking and abandoning as appropriate, that is, practicing as prescribed. And this follows the strong and stable desire to protect. In order to generate this, one must cultivate for a long time the faults of not protecting and the benefits of protecting. This has been said before in the case of the middle person. In addition, the Compendium of Perfections says: If ethics are lost, one cannot benefit oneself, how can one have the power to benefit others properly? Therefore, one must strive to accomplish the benefit of others.
