Thus it is said. Sharawa the Venerable said: I do not speak of the benefits of giving, but rather of the faults of attachment. It speaks of how ordained monks painstakingly seek and accumulate wealth, thereby causing many wounds to their discipline, and of their displeasure with giving. Second, regarding the Dharma giving: to teach the true Dharma without distortion, and to reasonably explain that the end of worldly activities such as crafts is without fault, and to lead them into the basis of learning. Fearless giving: to completely protect from the fear of kings and thieves, and from the fear of non-humans such as lions and tigers, and from the fear of natural elements such as water and fire. Material giving: to give material possessions to others. Third: merely eliminating stinginess towards one's body and possessions does not make it the perfection of giving, because stinginess belongs to the category of desire, therefore both the Hearers and Arhats have completely abandoned everything, including the seeds. Therefore, not only should the attachment to stinginess, which hinders giving, be eliminated, but the thought of giving all possessions to others should be generated from the depths of one's heart. For this, it is necessary to cultivate both the faults of complete attachment and the benefits of giving, the first as stated in the "Moon Lamp Sutra": the body is impure, life is as unsteady as water on a cliff, both body and life are under the control of karma, therefore there is no independent self, and seeing it as false like dreams and illusions, one must abandon attachment to it. If this is not done, one will be controlled by attachment, thereby accumulating great misdeeds and falling into the lower realms. The second as stated in the "Compendium of Trainings": Thus, my body and mind, are passing away moment by moment. If with this impermanent body that flows with impurity, I were to attain the constant and stainless Bodhi, would that not be a priceless treasure? Thus it is said. The actual way to generate it is: as stated in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": the body and likewise possessions, and all the merit of the three times, for the sake of accomplishing the benefit of all sentient beings, give without hesitation. Thus it is said, taking the body, possessions, and the three roots of virtue as the object of focus, thereby repeatedly habituating the thought of giving them to all sentient beings.
