Suffering is the same. After looking at it this way, one should not find fault with others, and if one sees even a little bit of merit, one should be surprised. Although it is said that, here also, one can add the appearance of being pitiful. The second part has three aspects: loving-kindness, compassion, and the cultivation of heartfelt goodness. First, the object of loving-kindness is: sentient beings who do not have happiness. The aspect is: how wonderful it would be if they were to encounter happiness, hoping that they would encounter happiness, and wanting to make them encounter happiness. The benefits are: In the Samadhiraja Sutra, it says: In the lands filled with billions of blood drops, countless kinds of offerings, those supreme beings constantly offer with this, cannot compare to the number of loving-kindness minds. It means that because things are very vast, constantly making offerings in remote lands is even more meritorious than this. The Manjushri Pure Land Sutra also says: In the northeast, there is a world called "That" adorned with a thousand worlds of Buddhas, the Great自在 Kings. There, just like a monk entering cessation, sentient beings also have happiness. There, even practicing pure conduct for hundreds of millions of years is not as meritorious as generating a mind of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings in this world, even for the duration of a finger snap. The former accumulates more merit, let alone abiding in it day and night? It is said like this. And in the Ratnavali, it also says: The food of three hundred Brahmins, giving three times a day, cannot compare to the merit of a moment of loving-kindness. Gods and humans will become loving, and they will also protect you, your mind will be at ease, happiness will increase, you will not be harmed by poison and weapons, you will obtain benefits without effort, you will be reborn in the Brahma world, and even if you do not attain liberation, you will obtain the eight qualities of the Dharma of loving-kindness. It is said like this. If you have loving-kindness, gods and humans will become loving and gather naturally, and the Victorious One also defeated the hordes of demons with the power of loving-kindness, so it will become the supreme protector, etc. The order of cultivating loving-kindness is: first to friends, then to neutral people, then to enemies, and then to cultivate it towards all sentient beings in order. The way to cultivate is: how sentient beings are tormented by suffering.

If you repeatedly contemplate these reasons, compassion will arise. You should repeatedly contemplate how sentient beings lack both contaminated and uncontaminated happiness, and how they are impoverished of happiness. When you become accustomed to this, the desire to encounter happiness will naturally arise. Furthermore, you should think of various kinds of happiness and then bestow these happinesses upon sentient beings. Second, the object of compassion is sentient beings who are tormented by the three sufferings in various ways. The aspect is, wishing that they could be free from these sufferings, wishing that they could be free, wishing that I could free them. The order of practice is, first towards friends, then towards neutral people, then towards enemies, and then towards all sentient beings in the ten directions. Like this, separating the objects of equanimity, loving-kindness, and compassion, and practicing them in order, this is following the teachings of the Dharmapada Sutra, and was composed by the master Kamalashila. This is extremely important, because if you do not separate them, but practice aiming at the general from the beginning, it may seem like it arises, but if you think of them one by one, it seems like nothing arises. By eliciting the experience of mental transformation one by one, as mentioned before, and then gradually increasing it, and finally practicing aiming at the general, then whether you aim at the collective or the individual, it will arise purely. The method of practice is to think about how those sentient beings who were once your mothers, after falling into samsara, experience collective and individual sufferings, the sufferings have already been explained. The standard for the arising of compassion is stated in the first volume of the Stages of Meditation: When, like a beloved child who is unhappy, you also develop compassion for all sentient beings, wishing to completely eliminate their suffering, and when this compassion arises naturally, acting in the same way as yourself, then it is complete, and therefore you obtain the name of great compassion. That is to say, the amount of compassion that a mother would feel for her beloved little son who is suffering, when the same degree of compassion naturally arises for all sentient beings, then you have the characteristics of great compassion. From this, you can also understand the standard for the arising of great loving-kindness. Third, after practicing loving-kindness and compassion in this way, exclaim: Alas, these sentient beings who are dear and beloved to me, are so lacking in happiness and suffering
