Seeing self-cherishing as an enemy, preventing special attention to one's own happiness, seeing other-cherishing as a virtue, preventing neglecting the suffering of others, and especially striving to eliminate it. In short, it means not looking to one's own happiness, but engaging in the purpose of eliminating the suffering of others. When training this mind, there are two obstacles: holding that the self and others, the basis of happiness and suffering for oneself and others, are established as separate, like blue and yellow, and then, based on that, also thinking about happiness and suffering, "This is mine, so it should be accomplished or eliminated," or thinking, "This is someone else's, so it should be ignored." The antidote to this is that self and others are not inherently separate, but are mutually dependent, because the thought of others arises for oneself, and the thought of oneself arises for others, like this mountain and that mountain. For example, for this mountain, the thought of that mountain arises from this side, but if you go to that mountain, the thought of this mountain arises. Therefore, no matter which blue color you look at, the thought of blue itself arises, but the thought of another color does not arise, which is different from self and others. As it is said in the Compendium of Trainings: "By practicing equality of self and others, the mind of enlightenment becomes firm. Self and others are dependent, like the opposite shores, which are false. A shore is not the opposite shore by itself; in relation to what does it become this shore? If self is not established by itself, in relation to what does it become other?" Therefore, it is said that it is only established in relation to what is related to, and is not established by its own nature. Furthermore, someone might think that the suffering of others does not harm oneself, so there is no need to strive to eliminate the suffering of others. To eliminate this obstacle, it can be said: If that is the case, then because of the fear of suffering in old age, one would not accumulate wealth in youth, because the suffering of old age does not harm the young. Similarly, the suffering of the foot would not be eliminated by the hand, because it is someone else. Thus it is said. This is just an example, and it should be applied to morning and evening, etc. If one thinks that old and young are the same continuum, and hands and feet are the same collection, so they are different from self and others, then the continuum and the collection are merely imputed upon many moments and many collections, and there is no independent nature. One's own self and the self of others must also be established on that continuum and collection.

It does not exist as something established by its own nature, merely dependent on self and others. However, due to the power of being accustomed to cherishing oneself since beginningless time, one cannot bear the suffering that arises for oneself. Therefore, if one also becomes accustomed to cherishing others, then one will also develop an inability to bear their suffering. Secondly, due to attachment to oneself, holding oneself dear, this has generated various undesirable things from beginningless samsara until now. Although one wishes to make oneself perfect, one engages in improper means by prioritizing one's own interests. Even though countless eons have passed, neither one's own nor others' interests have been accomplished. Not only have they not been accomplished, but one has been tormented solely by suffering. If that thought of self-interest were transferred to others and engaged in, one would become enlightened very quickly, and without a doubt, one's own and others' interests would be completely fulfilled. Because this has not been done, time has been wasted in hardship and meaninglessness. Now, having understood this, one should rely on mindfulness and, with many efforts, firmly resolve not to let the unarisen self-cherishing arise, and not to let the arisen self-cherishing continue, and repeatedly become accustomed to it. Similarly, one should repeatedly contemplate the benefits of cherishing others, and generate joy and strength from the depths of one's heart. One should not let the thought of abandoning others arise if it has not yet arisen, and not let it continue if it has already arisen. From whatever source compassion, suffering, or affection for others arises, one should generate the mind of cherishing others as one previously cherished oneself. Jowo (Atisha) said, "A Bodhisattva who does not know how to train in loving-kindness and compassion is known by the Tibetans." Then what should one do? He said, "One needs to learn and practice in a gradual order from the beginning." Langri Tangpa said, "Shawawo and I have eighteen methods for dealing with people, and one method for dealing with horses, making nineteen in total. The method for dealing with people is to generate the supreme Bodhicitta and then learn for the benefit of sentient beings. The method for dealing with horses is that the self-cherishing is what prevents the unarisen Bodhicitta from arising, and prevents the arisen Bodhicitta from remaining and increasing. Therefore, one should train from the side to harm it, and train from the root to benefit sentient beings." Khamlungpa said, "We, Jowo (Atisha), treated sentient beings like garbage, so sentient beings also...
