Pages 101 to 200. Pages 101 to 200. Do not associate with those who disbelieve in and slander the Three Jewels. Secondly, do not criticize the Buddha's image painted in pictures, no matter how good or bad it is, and do not place it in a place of toil. Avoid disrespect and contempt, such as mortgaging, and treat it as a field of merit, respecting it as a teacher. As it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": "The Sugata's image, even if made of wood, the wise respect it, no matter how skillful or clumsy it is." The Vinayavibhaṅga says: The bald-headed red Han said to the monks who study and do not study: "You bull-head, what do you know about Dharma and non-Dharma?" Having said eighteen kinds of evil words like this, he was born as an aquatic animal with eighteen different heads. It is said that from the time of the teacher Kāśyapa to the time of King Śākya, he lived as an animal. The Vinayavastu-kṣudraka says: After the teacher Krakucchanda passed away, King Sudarśana had a large stupa built, and a worker mocked, saying: I don't know when this large stupa will be completed. He said the mocking words twice. Later, when it was completed, he regretted it and had a golden bell made with his wages and hung it on the stupa. As a result, he was born as Sundarananda, who had a bad complexion, a small body, and a pleasant voice. Therefore, do not say that this Buddha image is like this, and that one is like that, and do not mock the construction of high-quality and large Buddha images, and actions contrary to this. A great yogi offered a Mañjuśrī statue to Jowo (Atiśa), asking him if this statue was good or bad. If it was good, he would buy it with the four sho of gold given by Rongpa Garge. Jowo replied: There is nothing bad about the venerable's statue, but the craftsman's skill is average. After saying that, he placed it on his head. It is said that he did the same for all the completed statues. For Dharma teachings of four words or more, avoid disrespect. Treat them with respect like the Dharma Jewel, avoiding mortgaging scriptures, selling them as merchandise, placing them in unclean places and places of toil, carrying them with shoes, and stepping on them. Geshe Kyenga invited the scriptures...

When seeing them, stand up with palms joined. Later, when unable to stand, also join palms. When Jowo (Atisha) went to Ngari (present-day Ngari Prefecture in Tibet, China), a mantra practitioner wouldn't listen to his teachings. A scribe used a toothpick to draw lines on the scriptures. Jowo couldn't bear it and said, "Atsama, no, no!" The mantra practitioner then developed faith and listened to the teachings. Sharawa said: We seem to be able to do anything with the Dharma, but disrespect for the Dharma and those who teach it is the cause of the decline of wisdom. Being foolish like this now is enough; what would happen if we were even more foolish? Even towards those who merely hold the signs of the Sangha or ordination, do not scold or despise them. Do not create divisions by saying, "You and our group," treating them like enemies. Do not do any of these things; treat the Sangha like the Jewel with reverence. In "Encouraging Pure Intention," it says: Those who desire merit and live in the forest should not examine the faults of others. Do not generate thoughts like, "I am especially superior, I am the best." Arrogance is the root of all carelessness. Do not despise inferior monks; you will not attain liberation in one kalpa. This is the order in this teaching. Like Geshe Dromtönpa and the great accomplished yogis, even in places with yellow patches, do not step on them; instead, shake them off and send them to a clean place. Learn in this way. The more you respect the Three Jewels, the more beings will respect you. Therefore, the Samadhiraja Sutra says: Whatever kind of action you do, you will receive a corresponding result. The second part has six points: Remembering the differences and qualities of the Three Jewels, taking refuge again and again; remembering great kindness, constantly striving to make offerings, and offering the essence of food and drink; remembering great compassion, also guiding other beings onto such a path; whatever you do, whatever you need, make offerings to the Three Jewels and pray, abandoning worldly methods; understanding the benefits, taking refuge three times during the day and three times during the night; even for the sake of life or joking, do not abandon or forsake the Three Jewels. The first point is: As previously explained, repeatedly contemplate the differences between internal and external, and between the Three Jewels, and their qualities.
