Therefore, one should consider generating the vows. Third, in the Compendium of Trainings, in the section showing that taking refuge eliminates sins, it says, "Here, the Jataka of the Pig should be taken as an example." It is like the son of a god who was about to be born as a pig, but because he took refuge, he was not born there. Those who take refuge in the Buddha will not go to the lower realms. Having abandoned the human body, they will obtain the body of a god. It is also said in the same way for the Dharma and the Sangha. Fourth, from the Condensed Perfection of Wisdom: If the merit of taking refuge had form, even the three realms would be too small to contain it. The great ocean, the treasury of water, cannot be measured by a bushel. It is said like that. Fifth, it should be understood by the former. Sixth, it is easy to understand. Seventh, whatever Dharma-possessing person does, if they first offer to the Three Jewels, then take refuge and pray, it will be easily accomplished. Eighth, as it is said in the Questions of the Lion, "Through faith, one will abandon non-leisure." As it is said, having found the special leisure and fortune, and having met with refuge, one should study the special path. By that, one will attain enlightenment without delay. Remembering such benefits, one should take refuge three times during the day and three times during the night. Sixth, since body, life, and possessions will inevitably be separated, if one abandons the Three Jewels for the sake of these, then suffering will continuously arise in all lifetimes. No matter what happens, one should vow not to abandon refuge. Even for the sake of joking, one should not speak words of abandoning refuge. Wherever one goes, one should train in taking refuge in the Tathagata, but such instructions have been spoken by previous ones, but the source has not been seen. Thus, the six common trainings are as they appear in the commentary on the Lamp for the Path. The first three of the individual trainings are explained in the Sutra Pitaka, and the latter three come from the six-limbed refuge. The way in which contradicting these trainings becomes a cause for decline and abandonment is as follows: Contradicting not abandoning even for the sake of life is directly abandoning refuge. Similarly, even if one has not abandoned the Three Jewels, if one holds onto a dualistic view of teachers and so on who are incompatible with the Three Jewels, it also contradicts not speaking to others, and one abandons refuge because one does not trust in refuge.

If it were not so, it would merely be a violation of the precepts, not something to be abandoned, I think. Thus, taking refuge is the great gateway to entering the Buddha's teachings, and if there is refuge that is not just verbal, it is because it relies on extraordinary power, therefore it will not be defeated by internal and external obstacles, and the distinctions of qualities are easy to arise and difficult to decline, therefore it will increase more and more, so as previously stated, taking refuge through remembering fear and qualities, etc., and striving not to transgress its precepts is of utmost importance. The second part has three aspects: thinking about karma and its results in general, thinking about them specifically, and how to adopt and abandon after thinking. The first part has two aspects: the actual way of thinking in general, and thinking by separating them. The first part has four aspects: the certainty of karma, the increase of karma, not encountering what has not been done, and not wasting what has been done. The first aspect is: whether it is an ordinary person or a noble one, any happiness that has the form of a pleasant sensation, even the happiness that arises when a hell being feels a cool breeze, all of these arise from previously accumulated virtuous karma. It is impossible for happiness to arise from non-virtuous karma. Any suffering that has the form of a painful sensation, even the suffering that arises in the continuum of an Arhat, all of these arise from previously accumulated non-virtuous karma. It is impossible for suffering to arise from virtuous karma. As it is said in the "Precious Garland": "All sufferings arise from non-virtue, likewise all bad migrations. All good migrations arise from virtue, and happiness in all births." Therefore, happiness and suffering do not arise from incompatible causes such as no cause, a chief, or a lord, but from the general karma of virtue and non-virtue arises the general happiness and suffering, and the various distinctions of happiness and suffering also arise separately from the various distinctions of the two karmas without the slightest confusion, gaining certainty about the certainty or non-deceptiveness of karma and its results is called the correct view of all Buddhists, and is also praised as the foundation of all white dharmas. The second aspect is: even from a small virtuous karma, a very great result of happiness will arise, and even from a small non-virtuous karma, a very great result of suffering will arise, therefore the internal cause and effect increase similar to the external cause and effect does not exist. That is also
