If they are tormented by suffering, one thinks about how to bring them happiness and how to liberate them from suffering. Even just training with words, one takes on the responsibility of saving them. This was also mentioned slightly in the context of repaying kindness, but what is being said here is that it is not enough to just think, "If only they could attain happiness, if only they could be free from suffering," with such compassion. Rather, one must generate a compassion that can lead to the thought, "I will work for the benefit and happiness of sentient beings." That is what is being explained here. These are not just things to do during a session, but one should remember them in all activities, such as between sessions, and cultivate them as a daily practice, as stated in the "Middle Stages of Meditation." Secondly, if one cultivates through the stages mentioned earlier and recognizes the need to attain enlightenment for the benefit of others, thereby generating the desire to attain enlightenment, that is certainly possible. However, that alone is not enough. As mentioned earlier in the context of taking refuge, one should contemplate the qualities of body, speech, mind, and activity, and first try to increase faith as much as possible. Then, faith becomes the basis for aspiration. Therefore, one should generate a desire from the depths of one's heart to attain these qualities, and one should be certain that it is also necessary to attain omniscience for one's own benefit. Thirdly, the general definition is, as stated in the "Ornament for Clear Realization": "The arising of the mind [of enlightenment] is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment." The classification is, following the view of the "Flower Ornament Sutra," the "Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds" states: "How does one know the difference between wanting to go and going? Likewise, the wise should gradually understand the difference between these two." Although there may seem to be many differences here, the thought, "May I become a Buddha for the benefit of sentient beings," is the aspiration bodhicitta. Taking vows and putting this mind into practice is the action bodhicitta, as stated in the "Initial Stages of Meditation." Secondly, relying on the treatises of Shantideva for training, there are three points: contemplating the benefits of exchanging self and others and the faults of not exchanging self and others; explaining that if one is accustomed to this mind, one can generate it; and meditating on the stages of exchanging self and others. The first point is, the "Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds" states: "Whoever wishes to quickly protect themselves and others should practice the supreme secret of exchanging self and others." And

Whatever happiness there is in the world, all of it comes from the wish for others' happiness. Whatever suffering there is in the world, all of it comes from the wish for one's own happiness. What need is there to say much? Look at the difference between a child who acts for his own benefit and the Buddha who acts for the benefit of others. If one does not truly exchange one's own happiness for the suffering of others, one will not attain Buddhahood, and there will be no happiness even in samsara. As it is said, cherish oneself is the door to all decline, and cherish others is the place of all perfections, so think. Secondly, just as one who used to be one's enemy, hearing his name would cause fear, but later, having made peace and become friends, one would feel great displeasure if he were not there, so too, following the habit of the mind, the view of oneself as others and others as oneself can also arise through habit. As it says: Difficult tasks should not be turned away from, for by the power of such habit, even hearing the name of one who is feared, one would become displeased if that one were not there. And: To place one's own body among others is not so difficult. If one thinks, "Since the body of another is not my body, how can I generate the same thought towards it as I do towards myself?" This body is also formed from the sperm and blood of one's parents, and although it is formed from parts of another's body, just as self-grasping arises due to past habit, so too, love for another's body like one's own can arise if one becomes accustomed to it. As it says: Therefore, just as you have self-grasping towards the drops of sperm and blood of others, so too, become accustomed to others. Having thus thoroughly considered the benefits and drawbacks, enthusiasm arises from the depths of one's heart to meditate on it, and having become accustomed to it, one sees that it can be generated and meditates on it. Thirdly, there are two: removing obstacles and the actual way of meditating. Firstly, what is said as "exchanging self and other" and "making self as other and other as self" is not training the mind to think of others as "I" and their eyes, etc., as "mine," but rather exchanging the positions of the two minds of cherishing oneself and abandoning others, and generating the mind of cherishing and holding others dear as oneself and abandoning oneself as others. Therefore, what is said as exchanging one's own happiness for the suffering of others is also not cherishing oneself.
