Therefore, in the cycle of birth and death, there is no instance where one has not taken this body, has not been born in this place, or has not been a relative such as a mother, as stated in the sutras. Not only has this been the case in the past, but it will also be the case in the future. Thinking in this way, one should firmly seek certainty that one has not been cared for by one's mother. For if one is born here, it is easy to remember her kindness, etc., but if one is not born here, there is no basis for remembering her kindness, etc. Secondly, after contemplating all sentient beings as mothers, one should first contemplate one's mother in this life, as Potowa promised, so that it arises quickly. Visualize a clear image of your mother in front of you. Not only now, but from beginningless samsara, she has been my mother countless times, think in this way several times. In this way, when she was my mother, she protected me from all harm and accomplished all benefits and happiness. Especially in this life, she first carried me in her womb for a long time. Then, at the time of birth, a fuzzy, yellowish little thing snuggled against her warmth. Playing with her ten fingers. Feeding me milk. Feeding me food with her mouth. Wiping my snot with her mouth. Wiping my impurities with her hands, raising me in various ways without fatigue. Moreover, when I was hungry and thirsty, she gave me food and drink; when I was cold, she gave me clothes; when I was poor, she gave me wealth that she herself could not bear to use. These items were not easily obtained, but were mixed with sin, suffering, and evil words, and were obtained through hard work. If the child suffers from illness or other suffering, she would rather die herself than have the child die; she would rather be sick herself than have the child be sick, choosing this from the bottom of her heart. And she would use methods to eliminate the child's suffering. In short, to the best of her knowledge and ability, she would accomplish all benefits and happiness, and eliminate all harm and suffering, focusing single-mindedly on these ways. After contemplating in this way, when a mind of remembering kindness arises that is not merely verbal, then one should also regard one's father and other friends as mothers and contemplate. Then, one should also regard those in between as mothers and contemplate. When a mind arises that is like treating friends, one should also regard enemies as mothers and contemplate. When a mind arises that is like treating one's mother, one should first regard all sentient beings as mothers, and then gradually expand the scope and contemplate.

Thirdly, just because we don't recognize them due to the transience of birth and death, to abandon my kind mothers who are suffering and helpless, and to try to liberate oneself from samsara, there is nothing more shameless than that. As it says in the Śikṣāsamuccaya: "Relatives are immersed in the ocean of samsara, like falling into a deep abyss. Because of the transience of birth and death, they are not recognized. If one person seeks liberation for themselves, there is no greater shame than this." Therefore, abandoning such kind mothers is something that even the lowest of people would find inappropriate, let alone myself. Thinking this way, one should take on the responsibility of repaying their kindness. So, how should one repay their kindness? Even if the mother herself obtains the happiness and wealth of samsara, she cannot avoid being deceived by them. Therefore, I should not inflict various kinds of suffering on those beings who are naturally suffering, just as in the past, when I was deluded by the demon of afflictions, and the wound was already severe, I would sprinkle salt on it. Instead, I should repay them with loving-kindness, so that they may attain the happiness of liberation and nirvana. In short, one's own mother is deranged because she does not remember, like a blind person without a guide. Every step she takes, she may fall, and she faces a terrifying cliff. If the mother does not rely on her son, who else can she rely on? If the son does not rescue the mother from that fear, who else can? So, one must liberate them. Similarly, sentient beings who have been our mothers in the past are deranged because the demon of afflictions has disturbed their minds, preventing them from being autonomous. They have lost the eyes to see the path of higher rebirth and definite goodness, and they have no guide of a true spiritual friend. Every moment, they are creating obstacles with their misdeeds, and seeing them heading towards samsara, especially the cliffs of the lower realms. The mother needs to rely on her son, and the son should also liberate the mother. So, thinking in this way, one must repay the kindness of liberating them from samsara. As it says in the Śikṣāsamuccaya: "Afflicted by afflictions, the mind is deranged, ignorant, blind, and without direction. Step by step, they approach the edge of the cliff. Self and others are the cause of sorrow. All beings are in suffering."
