To repay kindness is from remembering kindness; remembering kindness comes from seeing it as a kindness, there are seven in total. Here there are two: generating certainty in the order, and actually practicing the meaning in order. The first has two: showing the root of the Mahayana path as compassion, and the reason why other causes and effects transform into its causes and effects. The first has three: important at the beginning, important in the middle, and important at the end. The first is: if great compassion moves the mind, then in order to liberate all sentient beings from samsara, one will definitely make a vow. If compassion is weak, then one will not act in this way, therefore, the burden of saving all beings depends on this. If one does not take on this burden, then one does not belong to the Mahayana practitioner, therefore, compassion is important at the beginning. In the Teaching of Inexhaustible Intelligence it says: Venerable Sharadvati's son, also, the great compassion of the Bodhisattvas is inexhaustible. Why is that? Because it is the forerunner. Venerable Sharadvati's son, for example, the breath going in and out is the forerunner of the life force of a person. Similarly, the great compassion of the Bodhisattva is the forerunner of the perfect accomplishment of the Great Vehicle. Also in the Gaya Gaurī it says: Manjushri, what is the beginning of the conduct of the Bodhisattvas? What is the dwelling place? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, the beginning of the conduct of the Bodhisattvas is great compassion, and the dwelling place is sentient beings. Thus it is. The second is: Thus, once such a mind has arisen and entered, but sentient beings are numerous and act badly, and what should be learned is also extremely difficult and limitless, and time is also needed for countless eons, seeing these and becoming discouraged, thereby falling into the Hinayana. If it is not just once that great compassion arises, but one becomes accustomed to increasing it, then one does not look at one's own happiness and suffering, and one is not weary of benefiting others, thereby easily perfecting all accumulations. The third is: when the Buddhas attain the fruit, they do not abide in peace like the Hinayana, but benefit beings as long as space exists, this is also the power of great compassion, without it, one would become like a Shravaka. For example, for crops, the seed is first, and water in the middle.

Just as the final ripening is important, so too is compassion important in the beginning, middle, and end for the harvest of the Buddha, as stated by glorious Chandrakirti. Therefore, when Zhang Nachengtönpa requested teachings from Jowo, Jowo only said, "Renounce the world and cultivate bodhicitta." Geshe Tönpa was ashamed of this and said, "This is the essence of Jowo's teachings." He said this because he was proficient in the key points of the Dharma. Gaining certainty is also difficult, so one must repeatedly accumulate and purify, and seek firm certainty by looking at scriptures and commentaries such as the Ornament of the Tree. As glorious Makhol said, "Your mind is a jewel, the seed of perfect enlightenment, only you understand its essence, others cannot comprehend it." The second part has two points: how knowing the mother becomes the intermediate cause for love, and how heartfelt good intentions and bodhicitta become the result. The first point is: In general, merely wanting to be separated from suffering can arise by repeatedly contemplating the suffering of sentient beings. However, in order for that thought to arise easily, powerfully, and stably, it is necessary to first have a sentient being that is pleasing, cherished, and pitiable. It is like being unable to bear the suffering of a loved one, rejoicing at the suffering of an enemy, and mostly ignoring and developing an attitude of indifference towards the suffering of someone who is neither an enemy nor a loved one. Of these, the first is because there is affection, and the more cherished they are, the more unbearable their suffering becomes. For slight cherishing, the degree of unbearableness is small, while for extreme cherishing, even small suffering becomes greatly unbearable. Seeing the suffering of an enemy, not only does the thought of wanting to be separated from suffering not arise, but the thought of wanting them to suffer even more, or wanting them not to be separated from suffering, arises because they are disliked. Moreover, the degree of dislike affects the degree of joy felt when the enemy suffers. There is neither unbearableness nor joy in the suffering of someone who is neither an enemy nor a loved one, because there is neither affection nor dislike. Therefore, cultivating sentient beings as loved ones is for the purpose of cultivating affection, and the ultimate purpose of loved ones is not the mother, so one must cultivate the mother, remember her kindness, and repay her kindness, these three
