If you cannot protect it, and if your wisdom is insufficient, then abandon the quotations and only protect the essence of the meaning that is appropriate for the situation. These are analytical meditations, but do not let the mind wander to anything other than the objects of meditation, whether virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral. Prevent the mind from being agitated, etc., towards the object. Do not let sleepiness and dullness or sinking control you, but meditate with a relaxed attitude in a state of clear and bright awareness. As it says in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "Recitations and asceticism, etc., practiced diligently for a long time, if done with a distracted mind, are said to be meaningless by the wise." Because all virtuous actions with the mind wandering elsewhere are said to have small results. Moreover, in the Sutra on Cultivating Faith in the Great Vehicle, it also says: "Son of good family, in this way, the faith of Bodhisattvas in the Great Vehicle, whatever arises from the Great Vehicle, should be known to arise from a non-distracted mind, truly contemplating the meaning and the Dharma." Therefore, a non-distracted mind is one that does not wander from the virtuous object. Meaning and Dharma are meaning and words, and truly contemplating is observing and thinking with discriminating wisdom. Therefore, this shows that both of these are necessary for accomplishing all qualities of Dharma. Therefore, for accomplishing all the qualities of the three vehicles, it is necessary to have either the actual single-pointed calm abiding that abides without the mind wandering from the virtuous object, or something similar to it, and either the actual insight that distinguishes the suchness and the extent of the virtuous object by discriminating observation, or something similar to it. As it says in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra: "Maitreya, furthermore, all the worldly or transworldly virtuous Dharmas of either the Shravakas, the Bodhisattvas, or the Tathagatas should be known as the fruit of calm abiding and insight." If you do not practice both the actual calm abiding and insight and the similar ones, then all the qualities of the three vehicles will not necessarily become the fruit of the actual calm abiding and insight. Here, when contemplating the first of the eight sufferings, the suffering of birth, there are five: birth is accompanied by suffering, so it is suffering.

Furthermore, the suffering of birth: Beings in the hell realms, as well as the utterly suffering pretas, and those born from wombs and eggs, these four are born with many intense feelings of suffering at birth. Because birth is the cause of bad states, the seeds of arising, abiding, and increasing afflictions are continuous, so even tools that can be used for good deeds are not available, let alone being able to control them at will. Birth is the source of suffering, and relying on taking birth in the three realms, suffering such as aging, sickness, and death will increase. Birth is the source of affliction, when born in samsara, the three poisons will arise for those objects that will turn into attachment, hatred, and ignorance, and the body and mind will not be calmed, unable to abide in happiness, and afflictions will torment the body and mind from various paths. Birth is the nature of having to face separation unwillingly, therefore it is suffering: All born beings cannot surpass the end of death, and death is also unwanted, it will only bring painful experiences, these must be repeatedly contemplated. Second, contemplating the suffering of aging has five points: The beautiful appearance completely declines, the waist bends like a bow, the hair turns white like star flowers, the forehead is covered with wrinkles like a cut cushion, etc., youth declines and becomes ugly. Strength declines, sitting down is like a bag full of earth with a broken rope, standing up is like tree roots reaching into the sky, speaking is slurred, walking is staggering, etc. The senses decline, the eyes and other senses cannot clearly see things, forgetfulness and other things lead to a decrease in the ability of memory and other abilities. The ability to enjoy objects declines, food and other things are difficult to digest, and other desires cannot be enjoyed. The suffering of the complete decline of lifespan, most of the lifespan is exhausted, approaching death, these must be repeatedly contemplated. In the presence of the holy ones, it is said: "The suffering of death is intense but short, aging is the long suffering." Karmapa said: "It is better for aging to come little by little, if it comes all at once, it is unbearable." Third, contemplating the suffering of illness has five points:
