As it is said, "Water cannot wash away, hands cannot eliminate the suffering of beings, one cannot transfer one's own realization to others, but liberation is attained by demonstrating the truth of Dharma nature." As it is said, apart from showing others the unerring path and guiding them accordingly, washing away sins with water and the like cannot be done. Among the four qualities, being skilled in speech means being proficient in the order of how to guide and being skilled in conveying the meaning to the minds of those to be tamed. Compassion is the purity of the motivation of the Dharma teacher, not looking to gain or honor, but speaking out of compassion. Potowa said, "In front of the venerable one, the son of Limo, no matter how much Dharma was taught, not even a single 'good' was received. There is no being who is not miserable. It is necessary to speak in such a way." Diligence is having steadfast enthusiasm for the benefit of others. Abandoning weariness means not being tired of explaining repeatedly, being able to endure the hardship of explaining. Potowa said, "The three trainings, as well as realization, and compassion, these five are the main ones. My teacher Shangtsun did not have extensive learning in everything, nor could he endure weariness, so he did not repay kindness with rewards, but because he possessed the first five, he was beneficial to those around him. Nyenton did not have skill in speaking, and when giving some merit teachings, he only thought, 'These people don't understand now,' and knew nothing else, but because he possessed these five, he was beneficial to those who were close to him." Although it is difficult to find someone who completely possesses all such qualities due to the times, one should not rely on someone with many faults or someone with equal faults and virtues, but should rely on someone with more excellent qualities. Thus, the lama who accomplishes liberation is the root of ultimate aspirations, therefore, those who wish to rely on a lama should understand these qualities and strive to find a lama who possesses them, and those (lamas) who wish to rely on disciples should also strive to possess these qualities. Secondly, in the Four Hundred Verses it says, "An impartial, intelligent, and meaning-seeking person is said to be a vessel for listening. The qualities of the speaker do not change in the other way for the listener either." It is said that someone who possesses three qualities is suitable as a vessel for listening to the Dharma, and if one possesses these three qualities, then the qualities of the speaker of the Dharma will appear as qualities and not as faults, and not only that, but also the qualities of the listener...

It is said that what appears as merit to us ordinary beings does not appear as fault to the saints. If the characteristics of the vessel are not complete, even if the spiritual friend of the speaker is very pure, it will be regarded as faulty due to the faults of the listener, and the faults of the speaker will also be regarded as merits, as stated in the commentary. Being impartial means being without bias. If there is bias, it will be obscured and the merit will not be seen, so the meaning of the good saying cannot be understood. As it says in the Madhyamaka Essence, "Because the mind is tormented by bias, peace will never be realized." Like that. Bias is attachment to one's own system and hatred of other systems. Such a thing must be examined in one's own mind and abandoned. Do you think that's enough? Even if you are impartial, if you do not have the intellectual ability to distinguish between the correct path of good speech and the seemingly correct wrong path, you cannot be a vessel. Therefore, it is necessary to have the intelligence to understand both. Do you think it is enough to have only these two? Even if you have these two, if you listen to the Dharma like listening to a picture, you cannot be a vessel. Therefore, you must have a great desire for Dharma. The commentary says that adding respect for the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma and wholehearted devotion, a total of five are mentioned. In this way, there are four points: having a strong desire for Dharma, being wholeheartedly devoted when listening to Dharma, holding great respect for the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma, and abandoning wrong speech and adopting good speech. The favorable condition for these four is having intelligence, and the abandonment of unfavorable conditions is being impartial. Carefully examine whether all the Dharmas that the lama likes are complete. If they are all complete, cultivate joy. If they are not complete, strive to create the causes for them to be complete in the future. Third, the person who possesses the vessel in this way should examine whether the lama possesses the characteristics as mentioned before, and receive the grace of the Dharma from the one who possesses the characteristics. Having received the grace in this way, especially for the spiritual friend who guides the mind well with the complete instructions, there are two ways to rely on him: the way to rely on him with intention and the way to rely on him with action. The first has two: the root is to cultivate faith, and to remember the kindness and be respectful. The first is, as it says in the Dharani of the Jewel Heap, "Faith arises like a leading mother, protecting all qualities and making them grow." That is, to generate faith.
