Thus, the Dharma itself seems to become an accomplice to afflictions. Therefore, as it is said, "If you miss the first, you miss the fifteenth," those with wisdom should strive to put listening and speaking into practice, ensuring that either speaking or listening occurs alternately, possessing at least one of them. This is because it is the best preliminary for showing instructions. The fourth part has two aspects: the way to rely on a spiritual friend as the root of the path, and the order of how to train the mind after relying on them. The first part has two aspects: explaining in a little more detail to generate certainty, and briefly showing the way to cultivate. The first point is: even if a single quality arises in the disciple's mindstream, or a single fault diminishes, the root of all happiness and goodness is the holy guru, so the way to rely on them is very important. There are six aspects to this: the characteristics of the virtuous spiritual friend to be relied upon, the characteristics of the disciple who relies, how the disciple relies on them, the benefits of relying, the faults of not relying, and summarizing the meaning of these. The first point is: in general, many things have been said from the scriptures and commentaries, including those pertaining to each vehicle. But here, we are showing a virtuous spiritual friend who gradually leads through the paths of the three types of individuals, and then leads to the Great Vehicle, the path of enlightenment. This is as stated in the Ornament for Clear Realization: "A spiritual friend is tamed, peaceful, and extremely peaceful, superior in qualities, diligent, rich in scripture, realized of suchness, skilled in speaking, and possessed of compassion, relying on whom one abandons weariness." This means that a disciple must rely on a spiritual friend who possesses ten qualities (Tibetan: ཆོས་བཅུ།). Because if one is not tamed oneself, it is said that taming others is impossible. Therefore, the guru who tames others must first tame their own mindstream. So, how should one tame it? If one just does some practice haphazardly and then labels some things as qualities of realization, it is of no benefit to the mindstream. Therefore, there must be a way to tame the mindstream that is consistent with the general teachings of the Buddha. That is determined to be the three precious trainings, hence the three, such as taming, are mentioned. Among these, taming is the training of discipline, as stated in the Pratimoksha: "Always pursuing with diligence, the mind is like a wild horse, difficult to tame, with a hundred sharp iron spikes.

The rein is the Pratimoksha. As it is said, just as a trainer of wild horses tames them with good reins, so too, following the senses that have gone astray is like a wild horse. If it enters into what should not be done, it is restrained. Through many efforts, it is made to enter into what should be done. By learning discipline, the mind-horse is tamed. Tranquility is: in this way, for entering into and returning from what is well-done and what is ill-done, by relying on mindfulness and awareness, the learning of Samadhi, which abides peacefully within the mind, is born. Near-tranquility is: relying on a mind that is workable and tranquil, by individually examining the meaning of what is truly real, the learning of wisdom is born. In this way, it is not enough to merely possess the qualities of realization that have tamed the mind-stream through the three trainings. One must also possess the qualities of scripture, so to be rich in scripture means to be widely learned in the three baskets and so forth. Geshe Tonpa said: The activity of a Mahayana lama is to generate an understanding that is vast and limitless when teaching, and when putting it into practice, to show what is beneficial for the end of the teachings and what directly becomes meaningful. Realizing that very thing means: the special learning of wisdom, realizing the absence of self of phenomena, or mainly taking as primary the direct realization of suchness. Even if that is not present, it can still be accomplished through reasoning and scripture. In this way, even if one possesses scripture and realization, it is not enough if one is inferior to or equal to the student, so one must possess a superior quality. As it says in the Compendium: By relying on an inferior person, impurity changes into decline, by relying on an equal person, one remains in one's place, by relying on a superior person, one will surely obtain superior qualities, therefore, one should rely on one who is superior to oneself. Discipline and tranquility, and the most excellent wisdom, whoever possesses these, one should rely on that superior person, by relying on a superior person, one becomes even more superior than that superior person. For this reason. Phuchungwa said: When I hear the biographies of the holy ones, I look up to them. Sharawa said: I take those old men of Radreng Monastery as my example. So for superior qualities, one must look up. In this way, these six dharmas are the qualities that one has obtained oneself. The remainder is the quality of taking care of others, which is as it says in the sutras: Buddhas' sins
