From the very beginning, one does not know that one is seriously ill. Secondly, for example, when one is afflicted with a serious illness such as wind and bile, one seeks a skilled doctor. When one meets the doctor, one is very happy. One listens to the doctor's words and serves him with respect. Similarly, one should also seek a Dharma-teaching spiritual friend, and once found, one should not regard him as a burden, but as an ornament, and follow his words and serve him with respect. Thirdly, just as a patient cherishes the medicine prescribed by the doctor, one should attach great importance to the instructions and subsequent teachings given by the Dharma speaker. One should cherish them through many efforts and not waste them through forgetfulness and so on. Fourthly, just as a patient believes that if he does not take the medicine prescribed by the doctor, he will not be able to cure the disease, if one does not practice the instructions given by the Dharma speaker, one will not be able to destroy afflictions such as attachment, so one should diligently practice them. One should not just collect a large number of terms without practice. Just as a leper with severed hands and feet will not change anything by taking one or two doses of medicine, we have been afflicted with serious afflictive diseases since beginningless time, and it is not enough to practice the meaning of the instructions only once or twice. Therefore, one should analyze each part of the path with discriminating wisdom and strive continuously like a river. As it is said in the 'Confession Praise': 'There, the mind is always completely deluded, and for a long time it has been relying on disease, what is the use of taking medicine a few times for a leper with severed hands and feet?' It is like this. Therefore, it is very important to have the perception of oneself as a patient, and if one has this perception, other perceptions will also arise. If it remains only in words, in order to eliminate afflictions, one will not practice the meaning of the instructions, but will only become a listener. Just like finding a doctor but not taking medicine, but only focusing on preparing medicine, the patient cannot be liberated from the disease. This is also said in the 'Samadhi King Sutra'. It also says: 'I have spoken the best Dharma, but you have heard it but have not practiced it correctly, just like a patient carrying a medicine bag, but cannot cure his own disease.' It is also said in the 'Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life':

These should be practiced with the body. What is accomplished by merely speaking words? Can merely reading medical texts benefit the sick? Thus it is said. Therefore, one should generate the understanding that diligence can cure diseases. The diligence mentioned is to put into practice the points of what to adopt and what to abandon that are taught by the spiritual friend. Moreover, to practice, one needs to understand, and for that, one needs to hear. The purpose of understanding after hearing is also to practice. Therefore, it is crucial to put into practice each meaning of what is heard, according to one's ability. If it is not like that, at the time of death, one will regret not having practiced, like imitating other actors, or like eating only sugarcane when seeking brown sugar. From the perspective of arousing pure intention: 'I have lost practice, what should I do now?' At the time of death, one grieves like a child. If one has not deeply understood, one will become extremely miserable. These are the faults of being fond of talking. And: Like sitting among a crowd watching a dance, praising the qualities of other heroes, one will lose one's own diligence. These are the faults of being fond of talking. And: The sugarcane peel has no essence; the delightful taste is inside. People eat the peel and cannot find the delicious taste of brown sugar. Just as the peel is like speech, the taste is like the meaning and mind here. Therefore, abandon being fond of talking, constantly maintain mindfulness, and contemplate the meaning. Thus it is said. The fifth is to remember the speaker of the Dharma, the Blessed One (bhagavan,梵文罗马拟音,世尊), and thereby generate respect. The sixth is to rely on hearing such Dharma and think, 'How wonderful it would be if the teachings of the Victorious Ones could remain in the world for a long time.' Furthermore, when teaching or listening to the Dharma, setting aside one's own continuum and teaching the Dharma separately will not hit the mark no matter what is taught. Therefore, it is necessary to listen in order to tame one's own continuum. For example, when one wants to discern whether there are blemishes such as moles on the face, just as one looks in a mirror to understand and remove the blemishes, when one's own actions have faults, they will also appear in the mirror of the Dharma when listening to the Dharma. At that time, the thought arises, 'My continuum has become like this.' Then one removes the faults and accumulates qualities.
