It should be sought through observation. Other means of abandoning the Dharma should be understood from the Sutra of Condensed Compendium of All Dharmas. Third, there are three aspects: the manner of listening, the manner of speaking, and the manner of concluding with shared practices. First, there are three aspects: contemplating the benefits of listening to the Dharma, generating respect for the Dharma and the speaker, and the actual manner of listening. First, from the Collection of Teachings on Listening: Through listening, one knows all dharmas. Through listening, one turns away from sin. Through listening, one abandons what is meaningless. Through listening, one attains nirvana. These four lines explain that by relying on listening, one gradually knows what to accept and reject. Knowing this, one practices discipline by turning away from misdeeds. Then, turning away from what is meaningless, one generates samadhi, where the mind dwells as it wishes on virtuous objects. Then, through the wisdom of realizing the selflessness of reality, one cuts the root of bondage to samsara and attains liberation. From the Jataka Tales: Whoever listens and whose mind becomes faithful, Will become well pleased and steadfast. Wisdom will arise and there will be no delusion. That is the kind of one's own share to be bought. Listening is the lamp that dispels the darkness of delusion. It is the best of riches that thieves and others cannot carry away. It is the weapon that destroys the enemy of universal ignorance. It is the best of friends, showing the means and the secret instructions. It is the friend who does not change even when impoverished. It is the medicine for sorrow and sickness, without harm. It is the best of armies, destroying the forces of great evils. It is also the best of fame, glory, and treasure. Meeting with virtuous ones is the best of births. In the assembly, one will please the wise. It is also said: Following listening, practice is made the essence. One will be liberated from the fortress of birth with little effort. Having repeatedly contemplated the benefits of listening, as mentioned above, generate heartfelt devotion. Second, from the Sutra of the Essence of the Earth: Listen to the Dharma with one-pointed faith and respect. Do not revile or slander it. Offerings should be made to the speaker of the Dharma. Generate the perception that he is like the Buddha. As it is said, one should regard the speaker as the Buddha, offer him respect and wealth, such as a lion throne, and abandon disrespect. From the Bodhisattva Grounds: One should be free from arrogance and disparaging the Dharma and the speaker.

And it is said that one should respect these two. Also in the Jataka tales it says: Sit on a very low seat. Fully develop the splendor of gentleness. Look with joyful eyes. As if drinking the nectar of words. Generate respect and bow with one-pointedness. Be extremely sincere and have a pure mind. Like a patient listening to the words of a doctor. Generate reverence and listen to the Dharma! Thus it is said. The third aspect has two parts: Abandoning the three faults of the vessel, and cultivating the six perceptions. The first aspect is: If the vessel is upside down, or if it is upright but unclean, or if it is clean but has a hole in the bottom, then even if the sky pours down rain, it will not enter, and even if it enters, it will be contaminated by uncleanness, and the purpose of drinking etc. will not be achieved, and even if it is not contaminated by uncleanness, it will not stay inside but will leak out and go away. Similarly, even if one sits in the assembly where the Dharma is being taught, one does not listen well, and even if one listens, one misunderstands, or one's motivation is flawed etc., and even if there are no such flaws, one does not firmly remember the words and meanings that one has grasped while listening, but forgets them etc., and if one degenerates because of this, then hearing the Dharma will not become a great necessity. Therefore, one must be free from those faults. As an antidote to these three, the sutra says: Listen well and thoroughly, and keep it in mind! Three words are spoken. Also in the Bodhisattva-bhumi it says: One should listen with the intention of knowing everything, with one-pointedness, with an attentive ear, with a focused mind, and by thinking with all one's heart. The second aspect has six parts: Generating the perception of oneself as a patient, generating the perception of the Dharma speaker as a doctor, generating the perception of the teachings as medicine, generating the perception of diligently practicing as nursing the sick, generating the perception of the Thus-gone One as a noble being, and generating the perception of the principles of Dharma as abiding for a long time. The first aspect is: As it is said in the Bodhicaryavatara: Even if one is afflicted by an ordinary disease, one must act according to the doctor's words, what need is there to mention being constantly afflicted by the disease of a hundred faults such as desire? Therefore, one must recognize that one is constantly afflicted by afflictions such as desire, which are long-lasting, difficult to cure, and cause intense suffering. Karmapa said: If one is not actually sick, but meditates in that way, it will be inverted, because one is afflicted by the chronic disease of the three poisons.
