As one contemplates in this way, in that very way, my mind develops faith in you, Protector. Those whose minds are ruined by the faults of dogmatic views, who are not omniscient, those with ruined minds do not see you, the faultless Teacher. As it is said. The fourth has two parts: individual precepts and common precepts. The first has two parts: precepts of negation and affirmation. The first is: From the Nirvana Sutra: Whoever takes refuge in the Three, is a true lay follower. Never to other gods, should one go for refuge. Taking refuge in the sacred Dharma, is to be free from the mind of harming and killing. Also taking refuge in the Sangha, is not to associate with non-Buddhists. As it is said, not taking refuge in other gods, abandoning harm to sentient beings, and not associating with non-Buddhists are the three. Among these, the first is: Even worldly gods such as Shiva and Vishnu are not regarded as ultimate refuges, let alone local deities and nagas who have become pretas. Furthermore, it is not proper to rely on them if one does not trust in the Three Refuges. However, it is not wrong to seek some temporary help from them for virtuous activities. For example, seeking help for livelihood from a patron, and having expectations of a doctor to cure illness. The second is: Abandoning harm to humans and animals, such as beating, binding, imprisoning, piercing noses, and loading burdens that are unbearable, through intention and action. The third is:
