The size of the body in the three realms of existence is not fixed. Due to the power of non-virtuous actions, there are various sizes, as stated in the Earth Store Sutra. Therefore, when thinking about the sufferings of the lower realms, even enduring putting a hand in a burning fire for a day, staying naked in the freezing wind in winter for that long, going without food and drink for a day, and being bitten by mosquitoes and other insects on the body are difficult to bear. How could I endure the sufferings of the hot hells, cold hells, hungry ghosts, and animals, where one creature devours another alive? Judging from the current experience, one should meditate until a state of extreme fear and dread arises in the mind. Now, because of having a good basis, by thinking in this way, one can purify previously accumulated karma, reduce the possibility of falling into the lower realms in the future, transform previously accumulated merit through strong aspirations, increasing it, and enter many new doors of virtuous conduct. In this way, each day can be made meaningful. If one does not think in this way now, when falling into the lower realms, even seeking refuge to protect against those fears will not be found. At that time, there will be no power of wisdom to discern what should be done and what should not be done, as stated in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara. The second part is divided into two points: cultivating refuge, the supreme gateway to entering the teachings; and generating faith, the root of all happiness and well-being. The first part is divided into four points: the cause of taking refuge, relying on what; the object of taking refuge, relying on that; the manner of taking refuge, to what extent; and the order of what should be learned after taking refuge. The first point is: Generally, there are many causes, but here, as mentioned earlier, one will not stay in this life and will die quickly. After death, one has no autonomy over where to be reborn and is subject to the power of karma. Regarding karma, the Bodhisattvacharyavatara states: 'Just as in a dark night, a flash of lightning briefly illuminates, so too, through the power of the Buddhas, fortune and wisdom arise in the world.' Therefore, virtuous actions are weak, and non-virtuous actions are very powerful. Thinking about the possibility of falling into the lower realms, one seeks refuge in the Three Jewels out of fear of the lower realms.

are the two beliefs that there is power. Therefore, if these two are just words, then taking refuge is the same. If these two are strong and stable, then taking refuge will also be convincing, so one should strive for these two causes. The second has two aspects: identifying the object of refuge and the reasons why it is worthy of refuge. First, from the "One Hundred and Fifty Praises": "Whoever has no faults at all, and in whom all qualities reside in every way, if there is a mind, then take refuge in that one, praise and respect that one, and it is reasonable to abide in that teaching." As it is said, if one has the wisdom to distinguish between refuge and non-refuge, then it is reasonable to take refuge in the infallible refuge, the Buddha Bhagavan. This also represents the Three Jewels of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, as it says in the "Seventy Verses on Refuge": "The Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are the refuge of those who desire liberation." Second, one who is liberated from all fears, skilled in the means to liberate others from fears, has great compassion for all, engages without partiality, and benefits all, whether they have been kind or not, is worthy of refuge. And this is only possessed by the Buddha, not by Ishvara and others, so only the Buddha is the refuge. Therefore, the Dharma taught by him and the Sangha of Shravakas are also worthy of refuge. Therefore, if one can gain certainty from these teachings in the Compendium and develop a single-minded reliance, there is no possibility of not being protected, so one should generate certainty from the bottom of one's heart. Because for protecting oneself, the external causes are complete, but the internal cause—trusting and taking refuge—has not arisen, that is why one suffers. The third has four aspects: knowing the qualities, knowing the distinctions, making vows, and becoming a refuge by not speaking elsewhere. First, one must remember the qualities of the refuge, so there are three: the qualities of the Buddha, the qualities of the Dharma, and the qualities of the Sangha. The first has four aspects: the qualities of the body, the qualities of speech, the qualities of the mind, and the qualities of the activity. First, remember the names and marks of the Buddha, for example, from the Praise: "Your body is adorned with marks,
