From the Paranirmita-vasavartin to the Paranirmita-vasavartin, one day is equivalent to one day in the human realm. The lifespan is a thousand years of the gods, two thousand years, four thousand years, eight thousand years, and sixteen thousand years. These are, in order, from the Black Line Hell to the Extreme Hot Hell, each day equivalent to a thousand to sixteen thousand years in the human realm. Beings in the Extremely Hot Hell can live for half an intermediate kalpa, and beings in the Avici Hell can live for one intermediate kalpa, as stated in the Abhidharmakosa and the Ksitigarbha Sutra. Secondly, each of the eight great hells has four walls and four gates. Outside of these, there is an iron fence surrounding it, and the fence also has four gates. Each gate has four additional hells for sentient beings, namely: a pit of fire, a swamp of rotten corpses or a place that smells like the filth of a toilet, a path of razor blades, etc., and rivers that cannot be crossed. The first of these is that the pit of fire is about knee-deep. When sentient beings move around to find a place to stay, when they put their feet down, all the skin, flesh, and blood disappear, and when they lift their feet, these grow back again. The second is that adjacent to the pit of fire is a place that smells like the filth of a toilet, and sentient beings seeking a place to stay cross over there, or fall there and sink headfirst. In that swamp, there is a worm called the sharp-beaked worm, which pierces the skin, flesh, tendons, and bones until it reaches the marrow. The third is that adjacent to the swamp is a path filled with razor blades. When sentient beings go there to find a place to stay, when they put their feet down, the skin, flesh, and blood are cut off, and when they lift their feet, these grow back again. Adjacent to the path of razor blades is a forest of sword-leaf trees. When sentient beings go there to find a place to stay, when they rely on the shade of the trees and rest, swords fall from the trees and cut off their limbs. When they fall there, wild dogs come and tear and eat them from behind. Adjacent to the forest of sword-leaf trees is a forest of iron thorn trees, and when sentient beings go there to find a place to stay, they are forced to climb the trees. When climbing, the tips of the thorns point downwards, and when descending, the tips of the thorns point upwards, and these thorns pierce their limbs. There is a bird there called the iron-beaked crow, which sits on their shoulders or heads and pecks out their eyeballs.

These are similar to the harm of weapons, and should be regarded as one. The fourth is: In the place where there are silk-cotton trees and birds, there is a river called "Endless River," which is filled with boiling molten water. Sentient beings seeking refuge fall into it, rolling up and down and being boiled, just like putting beans and other things into a copper pot filled with water and lit with a great fire. On both banks of this river sit people holding clubs, harpoons, and nets, who do not allow sentient beings to come out. If they are pulled out with a harpoon or net, they are laid face up on the burning ground and asked what they want. They reply, "I don't know anything, I can't see anything, I'm just hungry and thirsty." Then, they put burning iron hammers into their mouths and pour boiling copper water into their mouths. For the neighboring hells and temporary hells, the sutras say that their lifespan is uncertain. However, as long as the karmic power of suffering these pains is not exhausted, they will continue to suffer. The third is: Each of the eight great hot hells for sentient beings is located beyond thirty thousand yojanas. Thirty-two thousand yojanas below here is the Blister Hell, and from there, every two thousand yojanas, there are seven other hells. Among these eight hells, the Blister Hell is: Due to the striking of strong winds, the entire body shrinks as if blisters have formed. The Bursting Blister Hell is: Shrinking as if blisters have burst. The hells called "Sotam Tamma," "Kyi Hud," and "Achu" are named according to their pronunciation. The Ulcerated Like a Blue Lotus Hell is: Due to the striking of strong winds, the color turns blue and it splits into five or six petals. The Ulcerated Like a Red Lotus Hell is: The color changes from blue to red, and it splits into ten petals or more. The Ulcerated Like a Great Red Lotus Hell is: The skin becomes very red, and it splits into a hundred petals or more. These are the fundamental hells mentioned in the sutras. Regarding lifespan: Fill a container of eighty Magadhan khalas of sesame with sesame seeds, and then take out one sesame seed every hundred years until all the sesame seeds are gone. The lifespan of the Blister Hell is longer than that. It is said that the lifespan of the hells below is twenty times that of the previous hell. The temporary hells are located near the hot hells and cold hells, and they also exist in the human realm.
