Although it is spoken of in terms of the suffering that arises in the continuum, it is also the same in experiencing suffering. Thus, there are three ways to contemplate the suffering of the lower realms: the suffering of hell, animals, and hungry ghosts. The first has four: the great hell of sentient beings, the neighboring hell, the cold hell, and the ephemeral hell. The first is: From here, 32,000 yojanas below, there is the Reviving Hell, and from then on, every 4,000 yojanas, there are seven other hells. Thus, the first of the eight hells is the Reviving Hell: those sentient beings gather together and, due to the power of karma, strike each other with various weapons. Then, when they faint and fall to the ground, a voice comes from the sky saying: May you all be revived. Then they stand up again and strike each other as before, experiencing immeasurable suffering. The Black Line Hell is: those sentient beings born there have black lines drawn on them in many places, such as the four corners, by the hell guards, and then they experience suffering such as being cut along the black lines with weapons. The Crushing Hell is: when those sentient beings gather together, the hell guards make them squeeze between two things like iron mountains or the faces of goats. Then, immediately, they are squeezed by those two things, and at that time, streams of blood flow from all the openings. The Howling Hell is: those sentient beings seek a place to live and enter an iron house. As soon as they enter, fire burns everywhere and incinerates them. The Great Howling Hell is: the same as before, but the difference is that the iron house has two stories. The Hot Hell is: those sentient beings are put by the hell guards into iron cauldrons that are many yojanas in size, which are extremely hot and burning, and they are burned like fish. They are pierced from the buttocks with a burning iron skewer that comes out of the top of their heads, and fire burns from the two holes of the mouth, eyes, nose, and ears, and from all the pores of their hair. They are laid face up or face down on the burning iron ground and beaten with burning iron hammers, suffering the torments of hell. Hot and intensely burning iron plates wrap around the body, and they are boiled inside a space filled with molten iron and copper, like dumplings, moving up, down, and all around. At that time, when the skin, flesh, and blood have melted away, leaving only the skeleton, they are taken out and spread on the iron ground. Then, when the skin, flesh, and blood grow back, they are put back in again. The rest is the same as the heat before. In the Avici Hell, from the east, hundreds of yojanas of land are all burning and spreading, and the force of the flames comes, gradually stripping away the skin, flesh, tendons, and bones of those beings, down to their feet. Like the wick of a butter lamp, the entire body is covered with burning flames. The other three directions are the same, and the fire coming from the four directions mixes there, constantly experiencing suffering, uttering distressed groans, merely known as sentient beings. In iron filings, they are made to play in intensely burning iron sparks. On the iron ground, they are made to climb up and down huge iron mountains. Their tongues are pulled out of their mouths, stretched with a hundred stakes, flattened like treating cowhide, without wrinkles or folds. Again, they are laid face up on the iron ground, their mouths are pried open with iron tools, burning iron lumps are stuffed into their mouths, and molten copper is poured into their mouths, burning their mouths, throats, and intestines, flowing out from their lower bodies. The rest is like the intense heat before. How long they experience those sufferings is as stated in the Suhrllekha (Friendly Epistle): 'Thus, suffering is extremely unbearable, experienced for hundreds of thousands of kotis of years, but as long as that unwholesome karma is not exhausted, they will not be separated from life.' That is how it is said. That is, fifty human years are one day of the Four Great Kings. Thirty of those days are a month, twelve months are a year, and five hundred years are the lifespan of the Four Great Kings. Counting all of that as one day, thirty days are a month, twelve months are a year, and five hundred years are the lifespan of the Reviving Hell. Similarly, one hundred years, two hundred years, four hundred years, eight hundred years, and sixteen hundred years are the lifespan of the Thirty-Three Gods.
