Therefore, one must generate the thought of dying today. If one thinks of not dying today and takes the side of not dying, one will only prepare for this life and will not prepare for the next life. In the meantime, the Lord of Death will seize you and you will have to die in sorrow. If you prepare for death every day, you will accomplish many things for the next life. Even if you don't die, it is good to do so. If you die, then it is even more necessary to do so. There are three aspects to this: Thinking that the lifespan of Jambudvipa is uncertain, and it is impossible to determine when one will die; Thinking that there are very many factors of death and very few factors of survival; Thinking that the body is very fragile and it is impossible to determine when one will die. The first point is: Generally, the lifespan of unpleasant sounds is certain. Others, although not necessarily able to reach their respective lifespans, are mostly certain. However, the situation in Jambudvipa is very uncertain. Initially, some people could live for countless years. Now, living to ten years is considered long, and even now it is not clear who among the old, young, and middle-aged will definitely die. As it is said in the Abhidharmakosha: "Here, life is uncertain, the shortest is ten years, the first was immeasurable." One should think of the teachers or friends who did not live to the end of their lives, but died suddenly due to internal and external causes of death, and repeatedly think that one is also of such a nature. The second point is: This life has many harms, both sentient and insentient. For example, the harm from humans and non-human spirits, and the various ways in which animals harm the body and life. Similarly, one should carefully consider the ways in which internal diseases and external elements cause harm. Furthermore, one's own body must be composed of the four elements, and these elements harm each other. If the elements are not balanced and increase or decrease, they will cause disease and take life. These are innate, so the body and life seem stable, but they are unreliable. As it is said in the Mahaparinirvana Sutra: "The perception of death is that this life is always surrounded by many enemies, and it is decaying every moment, and there is nothing that can increase." It is also said in the Ratnavali: "The Lord of Death dwells within the conditions, like a lamp in the wind." Furthermore, living itself is a process of going towards death, so although there are many factors of survival, they are unreliable.

It is not right. As it says in the Ratnavali, "The causes of death are many, but the causes of life are few. And even those are also causes of death, therefore, always accumulate Dharma." That's what it says. The third is, the body is very fragile like a water bubble, so it doesn't need a big harm, even just like a thorn prick, even such a small thing can cause death, therefore, it is also very easy to be destroyed by all the causes of death. As it says in the Suhrllekha, "The earth, Mount Meru, the ocean, the seven suns, when burned by the fire, these sentient beings, not even ashes will remain, let alone the very fragile human beings? What more needs to be said?" That's what it says. After thinking like this, it is uncertain when the Lord of Death will destroy the body and life, so don't waste time, decide to practice Dharma right now, and make many vows. As Shri Jagata Mitra said, "Like a body borrowed from a landlord, without disease or decay, existing in happiness, at that very time, take the essence, to avoid the fear of disease, old age, and decay. When old age and so on come, even if you remember, what can you do at that time?" Just like that. Among the three roots, the most important is to think about when death is uncertain, therefore, you should strive. The third is, like this, seeing that you must go to the next world, at that time, no matter how dear your relatives or friends are, no matter how sadly they surround you, not even one can be taken away. No matter how much satisfying wealth there is, not even a speck of dust can be taken away. Even the flesh and bones that were born together must be abandoned, let alone others? Therefore, all the perfections of this life will abandon me, and I will definitely abandon these and go to another world. Also, think that maybe it will come today. Don't be controlled by relatives, body, and enjoyments, etc., decide to practice Dharma. Therefore, even though the rare leisure has been obtained, it is the basis of the path, so you must strive. As Potowa said, "Our phenomenon removal is the meditation on impermanence. Removing all the phenomena of this life, such as relatives and utensils, knowing that you are alone, inevitably going to the next life, thinking that you can't do non-Dharma things no matter what, first you must not be attached to this life. Before this thought arises in your mind, the path of all Dharma practices will be blocked."
