Therefore, one should strive to be unafraid at the time of death. If this goal is not achieved, one will generally not be liberated from samsara, and in particular, one will fall into the lower realms, and at the time of death, one will suffer from regret due to fear. Fourth, one should practice through the three roots, nine reasons, and three determinations. Among these, there are three: contemplating that death is certain, contemplating that the time of death is uncertain, and contemplating that at the time of death, nothing other than the Dharma will be of any help. The first point has three: contemplating that the Lord of Death will definitely come, and that it cannot be prevented by any circumstances; contemplating that life does not increase, and that the process of decrease is continuous; contemplating that even while alive, there is no time to practice the Dharma, and that death is certain. The first point is that no matter what kind of body one has obtained, or where one resides, one will be destroyed by death at any time, as stated in the Sutra Pitaka. Moreover, even if it comes like that, it cannot be prevented by running away quickly, or by power, wealth, possessions, mantras, or medicine, as stated in the King's Instructions. Karma Pakshi said, "Now it is necessary to be afraid of death, and to be without regret at the time of death. We have reversed it, now we are not afraid, and at the time of death we beat our chests." The second point is that, as stated in the Entering the Womb Sutra, the lifespan of being able to live to one hundred years seems to be the limit. Even if one is able to live to one hundred years, the years in between will be consumed by months, the months will be consumed by days, the days will be consumed by day and night, and the days will also be consumed by morning, etc. Therefore, the total amount of lifespan seems to have been consumed long ago, and the remaining lifespan will not increase, and the process of decrease is continuous. As stated in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, "Day and night, without stopping, this life is constantly decreasing, and there is nothing left to add, how can I not die?" In this regard, one can contemplate through various metaphors, such as a weaver weaving cloth, or a condemned person walking step by step to the execution ground, or a shepherd driving livestock back to their dwelling place involuntarily. In the Extensive Play Sutra, it is also said, "The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds, the birth and death of beings is like watching a dance, the lifespan of beings is like lightning in the sky, and it is as fast as water falling from a cliff." It has been explained with various metaphors. Therefore, for a person who has already understood this in their heart, there is no external thing that cannot show impermanence.

Yes, as it is said, if you think about it many times from multiple perspectives, you will develop certainty. It is not helpful to give up after encountering a little difficulty. The Karmapa said, "You say you thought about it but there was no result, when did you think about it? During the day you are idle, and at night you are sound asleep, so you are just talking nonsense." As it is said. At the end of life, one will be destroyed by the Lord of Death and go to the next world. Moreover, during this time, life is constantly decreasing, and there is no time when it does not pass. Therefore, from the moment of entering the womb, even for an instant, one does not stay but faces the next life. Therefore, the intermediate existence is also led away by the messenger of old age and ultimately goes to death. So, do not be happy thinking that while alive, you can stay without going to the next world. For example, when falling from the top of a high cliff, one should not be happy while flying in the air before falling to the ground, as it is said. Furthermore, it is quoted in the commentary of the Four Hundred Verses: "The hero of men, on the first night, for whom the world dwells in the womb, from then on, he goes to the Lord of Death every day without delay." The third is, even if you can do that much, you should not have leisure. As it is said in the Entering the Womb Sutra, in the beginning, for ten years of childhood, one does not develop the thought of practicing Dharma, and in the end, for twenty years of old age, one does not have the ability to practice Dharma. Moreover, during this time, half of the time is occupied by sleep, and diseases and so on also consume a lot of time, so there are few opportunities to practice Dharma. In this way, all the perfections of this life are like enjoying a moment of happiness in a dream, and only being able to recall it after waking up. At the time of death, it can only become an object of memory. The enemy of death will surely come, so why be attached to the deception of this life? One should think in this way, resolve to practice Dharma, and make many vows. In the Jataka tales, it is said: "Alas, the afflictions of the world, are impermanent and joy is not lasting. The splendor of the lotus, will only become a memory." The second is, death is certain to come between today and a hundred days from now, and during this time, it is not certain which day it will come. So, like today, it is impossible to determine whether one will die or not, but in one's mind, one has already leaned towards the side of death.
