2. Contemplating the remembrance of death, that this world is not long-lasting, and how the next world will transform, thinking about the happiness and suffering of both. The first part has four points: the faults of not cultivating the remembrance of death, the benefits of cultivating it, what kind of mind of remembrance of death to generate, and the way to cultivate the remembrance of death. The first point is: Although everyone thinks that they will eventually die, they think day after day that they will not die today, and they cling to the side of not dying in their minds, and this situation will continue until death. If this is not counteracted, and is obscured by this kind of mentality, then the mind of wanting to stay in this life will arise, thinking that this and that are necessary, and only thinking about pursuing the happiness of this life and eliminating suffering. Therefore, the mind of thinking about the next life, liberation, and omniscience, etc., will not arise, and thus one will not be able to enter the Dharma. Even if one in a hundred begins to study, contemplate, and meditate, it is only for the sake of this life, and the virtuous deeds that are done are weak, and they are often connected with evil deeds and sins, and it is rare that they are not mixed with the cause of bad destinies. Even if one practices for the sake of the next life, one cannot prevent the procrastination and laziness of thinking about practicing later, and time will be wasted by sleep, drowsiness, idle talk, and eating and drinking, etc., and one will not be able to practice properly with great diligence. Not only that, but because of excessively pursuing the perfection of this life, afflictions and the evil deeds caused by them will increase day by day, thus turning away from the nectar of the Dharma, and eventually being led to bad destinies. What could be worse than that? The Four Hundred Verses also says: "For whom the three realms have freedom, but he has no lord of death, if he still sleeps soundly like this, what could be more miserable than this?" The Entering the Path of the Bodhisattva also says: "I must leave everything behind and go alone. If I do not know this, I will create various sins for the sake of friends and enemies." This is what it says. The second point is: If a true mind of remembrance of death arises, such as being certain that one will die today or tomorrow, then even those who have only a superficial understanding of the Dharma will feel that it is meaningless to be with relatives and friends, and thus

Just as attachment declines, and the desire to take essence naturally arises through giving and other means, similarly, seeing all efforts for worldly things like gain and honor as meaningless, one turns away from misdeeds and accumulates good deeds like taking refuge and observing morality. Elevating oneself to a sacred status and leading beings there as well, what could be more significant than that? Therefore, many examples praise it. In the Great Nirvana Sutra, it says: Among all fields that are plowed, the autumn harvest is the best. Among all footprints, the footprint of an ox is the best. Among all perceptions, the perception of impermanence and death is the best, for these eliminate the desires of the three realms, ignorance, and all pride. Similarly, it is praised as the hammer that simultaneously destroys all afflictions and misdeeds, and as the door that simultaneously accomplishes all virtues. In short, the time to accomplish the purpose of life is precisely when one obtains this special support. Most of us dwell in the lower realms, and even when we come to the higher realms once in a while, we are mostly in a state of no leisure, so we do not find the opportunity to practice Dharma there. Even when we obtain a support sufficient for practice, we do not practice Dharma properly, and this is because we think we will not die yet. Therefore, taking the side of not dying is the door to all decline, and remembering death is the door to all perfections. Therefore, for those who have no other profound Dharma to meditate on, do not think that this is just their practice, or even if it is something to meditate on, only meditate on it a little at first, and do not think that it is not suitable for constant practice. Rather, from beginning to end, generate conviction from the depths of your heart about its necessity and meditate on it. Third, fearing separation from relatives and so on is the way of fearing death without having trained on the path, so this is not the place to generate that. So, what should one do? Since all bodies taken under the power of karma and afflictions are not free from death, even if fear of death arises, it cannot be prevented for a while. However, one should fear dying without preventing the causes of the lower realms and without accomplishing the causes of higher realms and definite goodness. If one thinks of fearing that, then one should accomplish them.
